Shades of Diversity at Workplace

Reality shows like Big Boss appeal to the masses. The gossip, plotting and political gimmicks
by the participants strike a chord with the viewers. A mix of people with different thought
processes leads to the ‘divide and rule’ policy in these reality shows. Imagine if we could
make this situation constructive. A ‘unity in diversity’ approach would make workplaces a
comfort to spend your time earning your lifestyle maintenance.

‘One style fits all’ leadership at workplaces is a myth. Let us consider four types of workplace
thought processes.

Leadership-oriented:-Charisma which has the potential to influence the masses is a key

personality trait. A personal connect with the audience is a desire which is worked on or a
naturally affiliated skill. Power due to a person’s thought process which makes him stand
out as a leader among peers. They also possess a talent for vision which creates a map from
the grassroot level to the well-established level. Values which inspire respect is a given.
Intelligence results in true success as it prevents this individual from being side-tracked by
the influence of self motivated individuals.

Artistic(Dreamer)oriented:- Individuals are generally intuitive and self driven. Their passion
creates waves. The people belonging to this category are a source of inspiration. They are
ready to express a part of their being through this medium. Persons belonging to this
category give priority to freedom of thought and expression.

Taskmaster oriented:- This category involves individuals who are goal oriented. They give
importance to the start and finish of a mission. The journey doesn’t matter as long as their
task is established. They are generally straightforward and form the basic structure of a
workforce.

Learning and development oriented:- They are good at research oriented information and
are experts in a focused study on a particular subject. Their strengths include a clear and
logical sequence, constructive and helpful criticism, creating a sense of community and
inclusion.

Borders are generally blurred with respect to reality and the above mentioned categories.
Death and life are two sides of the same coin. These four elements can lead to adaptation
and acclimatization of an individual’s thought process orientation which is a necessity for an
efficient leader. Have you heard about the “Johari window”? Johari window is a technique
which connects the relationship between an individual and his interactions with others. It
consists of four main areas:-

1. Arena-known to self.
2. Blindspots-not known to self.
3. Facade-secrets not known to others.
4. Unknown-aspects which are not revealed to ourselves or others.

A focus on blindspots would lead to greater heights with respect to career curves. It would
lead to a synergistic method of thought processes. A diverse workforce would maximise the
potential of blindspots if ‘unity in diversity’ is an approach.
