Six Steps of Residential Construction Estimating

1. Obtain Construction Drawings. Request a digital copy in PDF format. Look over drawings and
record any questions or concerns regarding design.

2. Meet with Customers. Discuss project specifics and ask questions regarding the project such
as: Serviced lot? Finished basement? Interior and Exterior Finishes? Plumbing and Lighting
fixture types? Landscaping? Decks? Concrete Driveway? Etc.

3. Contact Sub Contractors and Suppliers. Send them drawings for pricing their portion of work,
and specify any items as discussed with potential customers.

4. Commence quantity takeoff for portions of work to be completed by general contractor. Input
quantities and information required into estimating spread sheet.

5. Obtain Sub Contractor and Supplier Quotations. Input item costs and material prices into
estimating spreadsheet. Double check estimate quantities with supplier quotation.

6. Create Quotation Based on Completed Estimate. Describe and specify all items included
within quotation; also specify any items not included within quotation.
