Some of these prototype master cylinders required the use of longer push rods. If the
existing push rod in your machine is more than 6-3/4"long , it will need to be replaced when
the master cylinder is replaced.
Although the original single master cylinder is still available, both the single and early dual
master cylinders may be replaced with the current production unit. However, some deck
trimming may be required to accommodate the larger size . Current production brake line
fittings may be required for this conversion and will be suppliec upon customer request.

HYDRAULIC COMPONENT UPGRADES
MASTER CYLINDER
The original rear engine model Broce Brooms were equipped with a large capacity single
reservoir master cylinder. Dual master cylinders were installed only upon customer request.
Beginning with serial number 86332, dual master cylinders became standard equipment. The
original dual master cylinders had a relatively small reservoir capacity and were later upgraded
to larger capacity units. At the time that this change was made, several different prototype
cylinders were used. It was necessary to modify the push rod on some of the prototype units .
All are rebuildable, but replacing a prototype unit may require the push rod to be cut and ground
to approximately 6 1/2 inches in overall length or replaced with a new push rod (pin B-239-R) .
When replacing a smaller capacity master cylinder with the larger, current production unit , some
deck trimming may be required to accommodate the larger size .
The original brush function control valve used on Broce Brooms was a Model SP. This unit was
used from the early 60's until 1987. Beginning with serial number 86201 , ~he control valve was
changed to a Model SPK . This valve incorporated positive down pressure while retaining all of
the functions of the original Model SP, including the float position . These are both 3-spool,
monoblock valves. The main visual difference between the two is the alignment of the control
handles. The Model SP has all three handles mounted at the same level. The Raise/Lower
handle on the Model SPK is elevated slightly over the other two. Machines that were not
originally equipped with the "Positive Down Pressure" feature can be retro-fitted with the Model
SPK if desired. An additional hydraulic hose will be required to operate the lift cylinder in both
directions.
The Model SP control valve was sUbstituted with a modular unit on some early models . It may
be replaced with either the SP or SPK.
Effective serial number 86818, the direct drive core motor (DD-256-R) was replaced with a larger
displacement motor (DD-256-C). This upgraded the available torque to the same level of the
chain drive cores. Because of it's larger size, a new mount and altered hub spacing within the
core were required . Therefore, upgrading an older model to the larger motor will require the
replacement of the mount and the core The new style mount (MR-16-SPC) is identified by a
single hole drilled into the center of the end plate. Likewise, the new style core (D-15-SPC) has
a "Fifth" hole drilled into the hub mounting plate, outside of the 4 hole pattern .
STEERING UNITS
Four different orbital type steering units have been used on rear engine Broce Brooms . The first
three, S-248-R , S-248-8 and S-248-C performed identical functions. The current production unit
as of serial number 87260 is S-248-0. Although it is very similar in appearance to the S-248-C,
it is equipped for power beyond operation It is distinguishable from the "C" because it has 5
ports where the earlier unit had only four. All previous steering units may be replaced with the
power beyond unit, but new mounts and columns may be required .

HYDROSTATIC DRIVE SYSTEMS
The hydrostatic drive system used on rear engine model Broce Brooms has seen several
changes since it's implementation in 1986. The following page shows the current components
used in this system. A breakdown of the hydrostaic drive related parts used over the years is
located in this section. Please note that very few internal component parts are listed on these
pages. These pumps and motors are not considered by their manufacturers to be user
repairable. A complete parts list is available through Broce Mfg. Co. or the component
manufacturer.
The original hydrostatic drive system used on rear engine Broce Brooms consisted of a
Sundstrand variable displacement pump and fixed displacement motor.
The original pump, spec. # M46-2173, had 5,000 psi reliefs . In order to extend the service life
and refine the performance of the pump, the reliefs were dropped to 4,500 psi and control orifices
were installed in the servo control. This became spec. # M46-2664. The next spec. change
occurred when these units began to experience an unusually high number of leaks at the servo
cover. Sundstrand modified the valve plate timing of the pump which changed the spec. number
to M46-20132. The final spec. change was made during the incorporation of the SU-280-B motor
into the system. The final spec. number was M46-20160.
The fixed displacement motor changed very little over the years up to the time that the hot oil
shuttle was incorporated into the motor itself on broom serial number 87276. The spec number
for motors on machines lower than 87276 is M46-3013. Serial numbers 87276 through 87511
used speC# M46-3119.
A hot oil shuttle (pIn 8F3916) was added to the high pressure loop in 1988 in order to extend the
service life of the system. This shuttle was mounted to the left side of the transmission V-brace
and was plumbed into the high pressure loop itself. The only function of this shuttle was to meter
a small amount of oil from the low pressure side of the loop so that it could be replenished with
cooler oil from the charge pump. Maintaining a lower operating temperature within the loop
dramatically increases service life.
The original shuttle was replaced by a Sundstrand loop flushing valve. It performed the same
function as the shuttle but did not require expensive and time consuming manufacturing
techniques to install. This unit is mounted in the same place as the older shuttle but can be
distinguished by the lower pressure 3/8" hydraulic lines attached to it.
The loop flushing valve was eliminated at serial number 87276. It was replaced by a new fixed
displacement motor with a built in shuttle (pIn SU-280-B). The hydrostatic drive remained the
same through serial number 87511 (See exceptions listed on Eaton parts page) .
Eaton hydrostatic components replaced Sundstrand on serial number 87512. This system also
incorporates the shuttle in the motor as well as a built in neutral safety switch. All replacement
parts are available for both systems. We do recommend, however, that the system components
be upgraded to the latest Sundstrand or Eaton specifications when they are replaced.

!Four types of power steering units have been used on Broce Brooms . These units were periodically
ISUbstituted either for availability reasons or purposes of upgrade. For this reason, our records are not
Icomplete. Please identify the unit installed on your machine prior to ordering replacement parts .
The S-248-D (serial number 87260 & up) is the latest configuration . It is an open center, reversing unit with
"Power Beyond" capabilities. This "Power Beyond" flow is used to enhance the performance of the brush
core and to power the optional scraper blade attachment. All previous units may be upgraded to this style,
,but a new mount and column may be required.

FRONT AXLE
ASSEMBLIES
Three different front axles have been used on rear engine Broce Brooms.
The first axle, pIn FA-258-R had disc type brakes. This axle was replaced
by a new axle pIn FA-258-B, with drum type brakes. Approximately 250 of
these drum type axles were used before they were discontinued. Although
the quality of the axle was adequate, the availability of spare parts was not.
This axle was replaced by the original disc type axle. Approximately 1,800
of the disc type were used. In an effort to return to the drum style brakes, 25
new axles, pIn FA-258-C, were put in service while the disc type axle was
still in production. Current production units employ the FA-258-C, drum type
axle.
Although these axles are basically interchangeable, each axle uses it's own
tie rod end for steering. These parts are shown on the next page .

IFLOW REGULATOR
The flow regulator which is installed on the return line should be preset at the factory. This unit controls the rate at
which the hydraulic cylinders expand and contract. the setting should not be tampered with.
If this unit has not been preset, twist the knob clockwise until it stops. Tum it counter clockwise approximately 2-1/4
turns. This will fully expose the first two shims (Black & Orange) and the edge of the third shim (Blue) will be
visible. Tighten the set screw on the side of the knob to retain this setting.

UPGRADE KITS:
. Broce Upgrade kits "UK" are designed lor older machines buit before 1994. Prior to t~at :ime, most 01 the components were designed lor R-12 .
'Curr ent air conditioning components are designed to De used with R- ~2 or R-134a. ~,\2ct,irles o"ih since ;993 may have components sui;a!lle lor
.R-134a. Check the air conditioner unit itself. The compone~,ts wi!! be labe!ed "R -1 34 Compatib:e" .1 they are . If you are unsure of 2 components
' compa:ibility, it is best to replace~ . Partial upgrace k~s "PU" are designed for those units with R-;34 .. compatible components. CO:1densers and
I expansion valves need not be replaced.
In some cases, it is possible to reuse the current compressor. In the interest of long term reliability, we seldo::1 re~ommend t~is. If you choose to
keep the existing compressor, a complete flushing will be required because R-i34a system~ req~ire the use of synthetic compressor lubricants.
Non-Removable service port adaptors must be installee on the compressor .
