ACQUIRE ACCESS TO CYLINDER HEAD VALVES AND CAMSHA

ABOUT THIS GROUP


This group contains information on acquiring access to the
cylinder head, valves, and camshaft with the engine installed
in tractor. Disassembly and repair of engine components is
covered in CTM-1, 6466 Engines.

REMOVE VALVE COVER


'1. Remove right-hand side
shield.

2. Disconnect turbocharger lube line clamp (A) from valve


cover.

3. Disconnect crankcase breather hose (B) from cover.

4. Flemove air cleaner cover (C).

5. Remove air cleaner support bracket cap screws (A) and


disconnect ether aid wiring (B).

6. Remove support bracket.

7. Remove valve cover-to-head cap screws and remove


valve cover.

8. Reinstall cover in reverse of removal and torque cap $ if WS


screws to 2.8 N.m (25 tb-in). N $ NS*

ACQUIRE ACCESS TO CYLINDER HEAD

1. Drain cooling system.

2. Remove intake and exhaust stacks and hood.

3. Disconnect air cleaner support bracket (A).

4. Disconnect ether aid wire (B) and remove ether aid


assernbly with bracket.

5.D sconnect air intake elbow (A) from air cleaner canister.

6.D sconnect wiring harness and pipe clamps (B).

7. Dfsconnect air cleaner mounting bracket from exhaust


elbofv on left side of engine.

8. Disconnect and remove auxiliary reservoir hydraulic line


(C) 4nd steering lines.

9. Rpmove air cleaner assembly.

10. ffemove fan and viscous fan clutch as instructed in


Rembve/lnstall Cooling System, this section.

1. Sbparate tractor front end from engine as instructed in


Front End, Section 15.

2. Rpmove fan and viscous fan drive as instructed in


Rempve/lnstall Cooling System, this section.

3. Rpfer to CTM-1 for information on actual removal of


camShaft.

4. After repair or replacement of camshaft, reverse access


procpdures and tension fan belts as instructed in Re-
movQ/lnstall Cooling System, this section.

This group contains information on acquiring access to
liners, pistons and rods with engine installed in tractor. Use
this group as a guide for preliminary removal steps. Refer
to CTM-1, 6466 Engines for specific removal and repair
information.

ACQUIRE ACCESS TO CYLINDER BLOCK, .,il

LINERS, PISTONS AND RODS *\

Engine need not be removed to service liners, pistons and


rods. Engine must be removed from tractorto perform repair
on cylinder block. (See Remove Engine, Section 15.)

1. Acquire access to cylinder head as instructed in Re-


move/lnstall Cylinder Head, Valves, and Camshaft, this
section.

2.Remove cylinder head (A) as instructed in CTM-1, 6466


Engines.

3. Gain access to oil pan as instructed in Acquire Access


to Oil Pan, this section.

4. Remove oil pan as instructed in CMT-1, 6466 Engines.

This group contains information on acquiring access to
crankshaft, main bearings and flywheelwith engine installed
in tractor. Removal and service of engine components is

1. Separate engine from clutch housing as instructed in


Section 15.

2. Remove traction clutches as instructed in Remove/lnstall

TEST COOLANT OVERFLOW VALVE


(rF EQUTPPED)

1. Open hood, drain coolant to level below overflow valve.

2. Disconnect three rubber hoses from valve and unscrew


from radiator top tank.

3. Disconnect hose end (A) of tester from adapter (B).

4. Use rubber hose and clamps to attach tester to overflow


port of valve as shown.

5. Use pump to build pressure slowly. Relief valve should


open between 43-52 kPa (0.4-0.5 bar) (6.25-7.50 psi).

6. lf relief valve does not operate as described, replace it.

7. Fill D-05103ST Thermostat Tester with pure antifreeze.

8. Placer overflow valve irr tester so that temperature sensor


is submerged.

9. Apply pressure with D-05104ST pressure pump.Air flow


should stop between 106-109'C (222-ZZg.Fr, replace
valve as necessary.

10. Remove nylon elbow from top tank and inspect.

11. Use compressed air to blow screen out.

12. Coat threads on elbow with Gasket Maker Ty6299 and


install in radiator top tank.

7. RQmove belt from engine pulley and pull up between


discof nected cushion coupler.

8. WQrk belt (A) over fan blades through the notched area
(B) 04 the lower right-hand side of the radiator shroud.

9. lnstall new belts in reverse of removal.

10. Reinstall rear drive coupler (C) and rubber cushion


coupler (B).

1 1. Install cap screws (A) and torque to 47 N.m (gS tb-tt).

12. Adjust belt tension.

ADJUST BELT TENSION

1. Install JDG-138-l Adapter (A) of JDG-138 Bett tension


Tool over washer (B) between adjusting strap (C) and cap
screw (D). Install torque wrench (E) on adapter.

NOTE: lf adjusting compressor, ptace tool over cast tab on


top front of compressor.
2. With alternator (or compressor) rotated inward toward
block, slowly rotate alternator outward while reading torque
wrench. Reading should be smooth and less than 27 N.m
(20 tb-ft).

NOTE: lf reading is eratic and more than 27 N.m (20lb-ft)


pivot points should be cleaned and tubricated.

3. Use the following specifications to determine correct


torque for Step 4:

4. Slowly increase the torque to specification determined on


Step 3 and tighten adjusting screw. Torque specification
tolerance is + 4 N'm (g lb-ft).

IMPORTANT: Do not over torque, then relax to correct


specification. Fricilon will cause belts to
be over torqued.
5. Tighten mounting bott (F).

9. Ti lhten clutch-to-fan stud nuts to 28 N'm (20.5 lb-ft).
10. I eassemble in reverse order of removal. Tighten fan
idler rousing-to-cylinder head cap screws to 48 N'm (35
rb-ft)

11.' ighten pulleyto-clutch hub cap screws to 55 N.m (41

play.

5. Support pulley on press as shown and use JDT-gg


Bearing Driver (A) to press bearing until it bottoms in pulley
bore.

IMPORTANT: Press only on bearlng shaft to prevent


bearing damage.

6. Press shaft with pulley into support as shown until shaft


end (A) is within 28.S mm (1.2 in.) of being ftush with housing
parting surface (B).

7. Reinstall idler assembly as instructed in Remove and


Install Fan/Viscous Clutch, this group.

GAUTION: To avoid shock, always use a three-
wlre, heavy duty electrical cord, and be sure it
is properly grounded. Before connectlng heater
to power source, be sure that element is im.
mersed in coolant. NEVER energize heater in air.
