COMPUTATION OF MODIFIED UPLIFT PRESSDURE : Khosla's Theory

Parameters:
Apron length @ U/S, L1 = 0.00 m
Apron length @ D/S, L2 = 31.50 m
Total length of the floor, b = 45.90 m
Depth of U/S pile line, d = 5.50 m
= b /d = 8.35
2
= [1 + sqrt (1 + )] /2 = 4.70

FOR UPSTREAM PILE LINE

øE = (1 / ) cos -1 ( -2 / ) = 30.51
øD = (1 / ) cos -1 ( -1 / ) = 21.15
øC1 = 100 - øE = 69.49 %
øD1 = 100 - øD = 78.85 % of Net Head

Correction for øC1

a. Correction at øC1 for Interference of Pile No. 2
Correction = 19 SQRT(D / b') (d + D / b)
t = 0.20 m Cutoff wall thickness 1
b' = 13.20 m Distance between two Piles
D = 5.50 m Depth of pile number 1
d = 5.50 m Depth of pile number 2
Correction = 2.94 %
Since the Point C1 is in the rear direction of flow, the correction is (+)
Corrected øC1 = 72.43 % of Net Head

FOR INTERMEDIATE PILE LINE

Depth of pile line, d = 5.50 m
t = 0.20 m Cutoff wall thickness 2
b1 = 13.20 m Distance between Pile 1 and Pile 2
b2 = 31.50 Distance between Pile 2 and Pile 3
1 = b1 /d = 2.40
2 = b2 /d = 5.73
2 2
1 = [sqrt (1 + 1 ) - sqrt (1 + 2 )] / 2 = -1.607
2 2
= [sqrt (1 + 1 ) + sqrt (1 + 2 )] / 2 = 4.207
øE2 = (1 / ) cos -1 ( 1 - 1 / ) = 71.27 %
øC2 = (1 / ) cos -1 ( 1 + 1 / ) = 54.61 %
øD2 = (1 / ) cos -1 ( 1 / ) = 62.48 % of Net Head

Correction for øE2

a. Correction at øE2 for Interference of Pile No. 1
Correction = 19 SQRT(D / b') (d + D / b)
b' = 35.21 m Distance between two Piles
D = 5.50 m Depth of pile number 1
d = 5.50 m Depth of pile number 2
Correction = 1.80 %
Since the Point E2 is in the forward direction of flow, the correction is (-)
Corrected øE2 = 69.47 % of Net Head

Correction for øC2

a. Correction at øC2 for Interference of Pile No. 3
Correction = 19 SQRT(D / b') (d + D / b)
b' = 31.50 m Distance between two Piles
D = 5.50 m Depth of pIle number 3
d = 5.50 m Depth of pile number 2
Correction = 1.90 %
Since the Point E2 is in the backward direction of flow, the correction is (+)

Corrected øC2 = 56.51 % of Net Head

FOR DOWNSTREAM PILE LINE

øE3 = (1 / ) cos -1 ( -2 / ) = 30.51 %
Correction for øE3
a. Correction at øE3 for Interference of Pile No. 2
Correction = 19 SQRT(D / b') (d + D / b)
b' = 36.21 m Distance between two Piles
D = 5.50 m Depth of pIle number 2
d = 5.50 m Depth of pIle number 3

CHECKING for EXIT GRADIENT

GE = (H / d) [1 / SQRT( )]
H = 14.45 m Max Seepage Head
d = 5.50 m Depth of D/S cut-off #REF!
= b /d = 8.35
2
= [1 + sqrt (1 + )] /2 = 4.70
Assume type of Foundation is boulders, gravels and sand , therefore the safe exit gradient is 1/3 to 1/2.5
GE = 0.386 Hence, the exit gradient is not safe

CONCLUSION:
Based from the assumed material of foundation (boulders, gravels and sand) with a safe hydraulic gradient should be less than 1/3.5 to 1/3
(Lane's Safe Hydraulic Gradient for different types of Soils), the provided creep length is not enough to ensure the safety against piping. We
therefore conclude to provide an additional apron at the upstream section.
