Music, poetry and art to honour Seán McSweeney
Join the 20th SICMF as we pay tribute to Sligo artist and festival friend
Seán McSweeney. This event will coincide with the inclusion of a number
of Seán’s pieces in The Keeper exhibition, the Model’s biggest showcase
of The Niland Collection to date. On view throughout 2019 and beyond.

Festival Commission Workshop with Nick Roth on his
Second Quintet for Accordion and String Quartet
This workshop explores the inspiration, the voyages and the imagining
that go into the creation of new music. Nick Roth’s Second Quintet for
Accordion and String Quartet, commissioned by the Festival for Dermot
Dunne and the Vogler Quartet, explores the ezan, or call to prayer, in
Islam and the Sufi tradition in Persian architecture. The composer will
tell the story of how the work came to be, with live performance and
illustration of examples from the piece by the musicians to whom it is
dedicated.

Following an intensive weekend of masterclasses as part of the
Festival, these talented young string players aged 13 – 18 from
across Ireland, perform a selection of classics.

Programme @ The Model, Sligo
Tuned In Sligo International Chamber Music Festival Youth
Programme is a short intensive chamber music experience,
curated by Professor James Cavanagh for young musicians
and their tutors, combining masterclasses, performances and
attendance at Festival concerts.
This is an opportunity for young string players to develop ensemble
playing within the classical genre, engaging with high level artists in
the nurturing environment of the Festival. The weekend also brings
young musicians into the audience to experience live performances
of an international standard at one of Ireland’s leading chamber
music events.
Masterclasses will be led by the Vogler Quartet and the Grieg Trio.
Ensemble activities will be directed by Professor James Cavanagh,
curator. We invite string players, age 13+, grade 5 or above.

Visit Sligo this May Bank Holiday Weekend to celebrate the 20th Sligo
International Chamber Music Festival. Artistic Director Tim Vogler
presents another ambitious high-quality programme which sees
the return of many festival favourites from the past 20 years – both
musicians and music – performed by and with the internationally
acclaimed ensemble-in-residence, the Vogler Quartet.

The 20th year also sees two very special new events funded by
Sligo County Council’s Creative Ireland Programme 2018-2022: The
premiere of Nick Roth’s Second Quintet for Accordion and String
Quartet commissioned by the Festival. Join us on Saturday for music,
poetry and art curated by poet Gerard Smyth to honour the late Seán
McSweeney, a great friend since the festival first emerged in 2000.

The festival features the successful Tuned In! Youth programme


co-funded by the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership, in
association with Music Generation Sligo. This unique and innovative
programme is curated by Professor James Cavanagh from the Royal
Irish Academy of Music.

Taking place in St Columba’s Church Drumcliffe and The Model,


Sligo International Chamber Music Festival is one of Ireland’s
leading chamber music events. Festival Season tickets and Day
Saver tickets will be on offer to save and savour the full weekend –
the ambience of Drumcliffe, the contemporary environment of The
Model and the restaurants, shops, beaches and walks of Sligo.
