Javana and Kamma

Javana neans swift running. It is so called because in the course of a

tlr.ought-process it runs consecutively for seven thought-moments hanging
on to an identical object, The mental states occurring in alI these
thought-moments are sinilar, but the potential force differs.
In the case of death or when the Buddha perforns the Twin-Miracle
(Yanaka Patihariya) only five thought-moments arise. In the Supranundane
Javana process Lhe PaLh-Consciouness arises only for one noment.

Thls Javana
stage is the most i.nportant fron an ethical standpoint.
It is at this
stage that an action is judged whether moral or innoral.
Kanma is perforned at this stage; if view rightly (yoniso manasikara),
the Javana becomes mora1l if viewed wrongly (ayoniso nanasikara), it
become immoral. It is at this psychological stage that good or evil-
is actually done. Irrespective of the desirability ot Lhe undesirability
of the object presented to the mind, one can make the Javana process
good or bad. If,for instance, one neets an enemy, a Lhought of hatred
will ari.se alnost automatically. A wise and forbearing person night,
on the contrary, harbour a thought of love towards hin.

This is the reason why the Buddha has stated in the Dhammapada (V.165) -

"By self is evil done,

By self is one def i.1ed,
By self is no evil done,
By self is one purified.rr

In the case of an an Arahant this Javana is neither moral nor immoral.

But merely functional (kiriya), because an Arahant had conpletely
eradicated all the defilernenls.

True indeed that circunstances, habitual tendencies, environment, etc. ,

condition our thoughts. Then the f reewil,l is subordinated to the
mechanj-stic course of events. There is also the possibility to overcone
those external forces and, exercising one t s' ovrn f reewiJ-1, generate
either good or bad thoughts. A foreign element may be j-nstrunental, but
we ourselves are directly resDonsible for our own actions.

0f the normal seven Javana thought-moments, the first is the weakest:

potentially as it lacks any previous sustaining force. The kanmic
effect of this thought-monent nay operate in this present. life itself.
, It is cal1ed the Ditthadhanmavedaniya kamna. If it does not operate,
it becomes ineffective ( ahosi )
The last is the second weakest, because the sustaining power is being
spent. fts kammic effect nay operate in the j-mnediately subsequent:
life (Upapajjav edaniya). lf lt does not,it also becomes ineffeCtive.

The effects of the renaining five may operate at any time till one
attalns Parinibbana (Aparapariya-vedaniya).

It should be understood that moral and immoral Javana refer to the

active side of life (kammabhava). They condition the future exi.stence
(upapattibhava). Apart fron them there are the Phala and Kiriya
Javanas. In the kiriya Javanas, which are experienced only by Buddha
and Arahants, the respective Cetanas lack kamma creative power.

According Lo the Vibhavini Tika Javana occurs between-

(i) votthapana (determining) and tadarammana (registration)
(ii) votthapana and bhavanga (1ife-continuum)
(iii) voLthapana and cuti (death)
(iv) manodvaravajjana (mind-door adverting) and bhavanga
(v) manodvaravajjana and cuti

The Seven Javana thought-moments and it kannic effect.

Thus with the respect Lo the time of taklng effect, there are four
kinds of kamma, namely :-

(1) Immediately Effective Kamma (Ditthadhammavedaniya Kamna)

(2) Subsequently Effective Kamna (Upapajjavedaniya Kamma)
(3) Indefinitely Effective Kamma ( A p a r a p a r j- y a v e d a n i y a Karoma)
(4) Ineffective or. Defunct Kamma (Ahosi Kamma)
