Rhetorical Analysis Essay: King, Alvarez, Yousafzai

Persuasive writing and speaking can indeed advance the progress towards social justice and
equality by using plenty of Pathos, Logos, and Ethos as Rhetoric evidence. The purpose of
each text was somewhat achieved. King spoke against segregation which convinced most of
the whites to end it. Alvarez wrote against the Venezuelan government and helped educate
others on the twisted Venezuelan leader, El Jefe. Lastly Malala spoke out against the Taliban
terrorists and helping bring children and education. Kin, Alvarez and Yousafzai use Rhetoric to
advance their purposes by Logos, Pathos, and Ethos to bring about the issues they speak
against. King succeeds in advancing his purpose and halting segregation. The purpose of
King’s use of Rhetoric was to bring more emotions and information into his letter. King uses a
Ethos to describe the church he loves.King describes his church and how far he’s gone in his
worship to God. “Yes, I see the church as the body of Christ. But Oh! How we have blemished
and scanned that body through social neglect and fear of being nonconformists.” This Ethos
only describes his place of worship and what it means to everyone else who find comfort there.
King states that many people come to his church to look for purity and wishes if a better society.
He also states that most people have kept from changing society to not be the one person
who’s seen as different and who dosen’t go along with what everyone else wants. King uses his
Ethos to explain his church’s effect on the people and how it has become a place of peaceful
worship. Through this King shows he means no warm in his peaceful march and his reason
from being imprisoned was falsely issued. In a Genetics for Justice Julia Alvarez becomes an
author and writes about the life of her parents, her first book being about the three sisters who
were killed at the hands of Trujillo along with their husbands. Later when writing her first book
about life inside of Venezuela she had a choice of putting her family and friends at risk or to et it
published anyway. And yet she did. "This was one of the hardest challenges I had ever had to
face as a writer. If my mother were indeed speaking the truth, could I really put my work above
the living human beings? But if I shut up, wouldn't I still be fanning the embers of the
dictatorship with its continuing power of censorship and control over the imagination of my
Dominicans?" Even after questioning what role she plays in her parents probable demise she
publishes it anyway and even sends signed copies to her mom and dad. Who are both
extremely delighted to see her choice. Later her mother calls and states that she’s read her
entire story and she’s extremely proud of her daughter, who she always said was the best
behaved. Alvarez is successful in showing her purpose for writing this essay on her parents life
and showing how terrible life really was for them. Along with the fact that El Jefe was a terrible
leader and a megalomaniac. Lastly, Malala is able to convey her purpose of writing and
speaking such a speech which would be how her country is being oppressed by the Taliban and
most of the children have no education whatsoever. Malala fights to bring education to these
children in order for them to find their own way in life as she has. Malala stats that even after
being shot on the left side of her head she is still the same person and nothing has changed
about her. "I am the same Malala. My ambitions are the same. My hopes are the same. And my
dreams are the same." Malala states through this Pathos that even after everything the Taliban
has done she forgives them, and she states that her ambitions never changed whatsoever.
Through all of these events, Malala still strives to save children from poor education and from
being attacked by their countries rebels, or terrorists. Because Malala was able to have her own
education she was able to find ways to fight back the Taliban. And because of this Malala is still
fighting today to bring children around the world an education in order to be able to become
leaders and fight to bring peace and love through their countries. King adances his purpose the
best and it concludes with the end of segregation. King’s Letter is indeed the best article out of
the three to profess the issues it stands against and it solves the problem that was once the
largest issue in society. To compare we are able to see everyone else's viewpoint and to be
able to see everyone’s issue we are able to rethink our opinion on best article and possibly think
more into that specific issue. The other two articles seem to be a lot shorter and really didn’t tell
enough about their homes to really paint a picture of their issues as I saw. King clearly states
his issue and ideas in his letter which was a very long one. Everyone of the articles are
successful in clearing stating what the authors or speakers are working against. Along with this
each article also goes along with each author’s personal standpoint and their life as a result.
