East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Volume V Issue 12 March 24th, 2019
Pastor’s Corner
We are now almost halfway through the season of Lent, moving toward Easter on April 21, exactly one
month from the day I am writing this. Our Lenten sermon series and all-church study, Not a Fan, is a
challenging study as we all consider how we can move from being mere “fans” of Jesus to being
completely committed followers. We have a little more than half of our worshiping congregation involved
in small group studies. Several are on Sunday mornings in the church buildings and the rest are
scattered throughout the week and out in the community.
I’m concerned for the other 40-50% of our congregation not involved in a study, because they’re missing out on something very
special. This is certainly not to heap guilt on anyone, it’s just that I want everyone to benefit as much as possible from all that we do
here as the Body of Christ. Here’s one way you can benefit even if not in a study: watch the Not a Fan videos. If you have access to
an internet-connected computer, smart TV, smartphone, or a tablet, you have access to the largest Christian digital video library on
earth, all for free. It’s because our church pays a yearly subscription to RightNow Media, the so-called “Netflix of Christian videos.” We
have previously sought to get most of the congregation signed up for this service, because it’s available 24/7/365 whether at home,
coffeehouse or at church, with a simple login and password to get onto the system.
The Not a Fan set of videos is like no other video series I’ve ever seen. These are not dull, boring lectures; rather, they are acted out
and tell a poignant story of a family in Kentucky which deals with the sudden passing of a family and church member. These videos
have moved me to tears because the acting is so good and the story so powerful. The author of the series, Kyle Idleman, cuts into the
story from time to time to offer his pastoral heart in a gripping moment and to explore various biblical truths related to the central theme
revolving around the statement of Jesus, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily
and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it” (Luke 9:23-24).
I am so passionate about wanting you to have access to these videos, I will station myself in Fellowship Hall between services this
Sunday, March 24, for you to come and find me. I will have my laptop computer and will get you signed up on the spot. If you’re not
here on Sunday, please be in touch with the church office during regular business hours, and we will get you signed up that way. I
believe these videos (there are six, each between 24-29 minutes in length) will significantly enhance your worship experience as we
continue with Not a Fan through Palm Sunday.
In addition to Not a Fan, please remember we have three final Wednesday night Lenten services before Palm Sunday: Wednesday,
March 27 at Stroudsburg UMC, a Healing and Anointing Service focusing on “Prayers” with Pastor Sean Dougherty bringing the
message. Next will be Wednesday, April 3 at Cherry Valley UMC, A Trinitarian Celebration of God’s Gifts with Pastor Bill Kuntze
bringing the message, and finally, Wednesday, April 10 at Analomink UMC, a Reaffirmation of Baptism focusing on “Service” with
Pastor Nina Patton-Semerod bringing the final message. At each service, you may bring a financial offering for scholarships to
Pocono Plateau camp as well as items for hygiene kits. We also have a hygiene kit collection area outside of Classroom A in
Oberholtzer Hall. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday, as we explore the story of the Rich Young Ruler in the Gospel of Luke.

NOTES FROM THE NURSERY:
Last week, the preschool class focused on “Jesus
rescues” by hearing the story in Matthew 8:23-27 when
Jesus calmed the storm and rescued the disciples. They
also learned about a rescuer, ESUMC’s own Bryan
Wallie, who is a firefighter in East Stroudsburg. Mr.
Wallie showed the children various equipment firefighters
use to rescue, and helped teach them “Get low and Go”
and how to use the nursery tow rope in case of an
evacuation. The children made fire
trucks on paper and a fire truck snack,
and presented Mr.
Wallie with a
certificate.
Thank you, Mr.
Wallie!
