7.1c: The student will compare and order rational numbers

Instructional Objectives:

 Students will be able to take a list of rational numbers and list them in order according to
a specific “rule”(ascending, descending, etc.)

4-6 Minutes (Warm Up)
3-5 Minutes (Quiz Review)
As the students are working
on their warm ups, I will be
walking around and
answering any questions that
students may have. When I
see that students are done
with the warm up, I will
review the questions and
answers as a whole class.
During the warm up, I will
hand back student quizzes
that were taken at the
beginning of the week. I will
ask students if they have any
questions at this time as well
as address the misconceptions
that I found while grading.
When students come in, they
will have a 4 question warm
up that reviews scientific
notation as well as ordering
scientific notation. The
students will complete this on
their Boogie Boards. They
will check their work/answers
as we go over the problems in
class.
The students can use this time
to ask questions about the
quiz.

I will ask students to get out
their Boogie Boards. I will
then read a definition of one
of our former vocab words
and ask the students to write
the correct word on their
boards and hold it up. This
will give me an idea of how
well the students are
remembering their
definitions.
As the students walk in, I will
hand them each a random
number (these numbers will
be a mixture of fractions,
decimals, and percent). These
numbers will be their place
on the number line. I will
explain to students that they
must place themselves into
the correct order on the
number line. This activity
will practice the skill of
ordering rational numbers.
I will hand out the cut and
paste ordering activity. I will
tell students to cut out each
row (one at a time) and glue
them in ascending order in
the first row of the chart.
They will then continue to do
this for the remaining rows.
The students will listen to the
definition of the word. Once
they know what the word is,
they will write the answer on
their Boogie Boards. This is
also a good time where
students can ask any
clarifying questions on any of
the vocab words covered so
far throughout the year.
Students will place
themselves in the correct spot
on the number line, which
will be set up in the hallway.
They will be able to
collaborate with one another
during this process.
Students will work on the cut
and paste ordering activity.
They will cut, order, and
paste one row at a time onto
the blank chart that they are
given.
