Conservation-dependent species
A conserv ation-dependent species is a species which has been
categorised as "Conserv ation Dependent" ("LR/cd") by the
Conservation status
by IUCN Red List category
International Union for Conserv ation of Nature, i.e. as dependent on
conserv ation efforts to prev ent it from becoming threatened with
extinction. Such species must be the focus of a continuing species-specific
and/or habitat-specific conserv ation programme, the cessation of which
would result in the species qualify ing for one of the threatened categories
within a period of fiv e y ears.

The category is part of the IUCN 1994 Categories & Criteria (v ersion 2.3),
which is no longer used in ev aluation of taxa, but persists in the IUCN Red
List for taxa ev aluated prior to 2001, when v ersion 3.1 was first used. Extinct
Using the 2001 (v 3.1) sy stem these taxa are classed as near threatened, Extinct (EX) (list)
but those that hav e not been re-ev aluated remain with the "Conserv ation
Extinct in the Wild (EW) (list)
Dependent" category .
Threatened
As of December 2015, there remains 209 conserv ation-dependent plant
Critically Endangered (CR) (list)
species and 29 conserv ation-dependent animal species.

Examples of conserv ation-dependent species include the black caiman
Vulnerable (VU) (list)
(Melanosuchus niger), the sinarapan, the California ground cricket, and
the flowering plant Garcinia hermonii. Lower Risk

EPBC Act
In Australia, the Env ironment Protection and Biodiv ersity Conserv ation Act 1999 still uses a "Conserv ation
Dependent" category for classify ing fauna and flora species. Species recognised as "Conserv ation Dependent" do not
receiv e special protection, as they are not considered "matters of national env ironmental significance under the
EPBC Act" (http://www.deh.gov .au/biodiv ersity /threatened/species/index.html).

The legislation uses categories similar to those of the IUCN 1994 Categories & Criteria. It does not, howev er, hav e a
near threatened category or any other "lower risk" categories.

As of December 2006, only two species hav e receiv ed the status under the act:

Orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus)

Southern bent-wing bat (Miniopterus schreibersii bassanii)
No flora has been giv en the category under the EPBC Act.
