INTRODUCCIÓN A LA 2ª EDICIÓN
28
2ª edicion libro 2.:Maquetación 1 10/01/13 09:46 Página 29
The aim of this second edition of the 501, which hopefully will not be the last,
remains threefold:
- Concerning the technical aspect of signalling, errors have been corrected and
some terms have been changed in order to aid their understanding, as follows:

The chapter on RAMS has been renamed SAFETY CONCEPTS AND RAMS,
and I have completely rewritten it as they are both fundamental concepts in
signalling. Safety as a basic traditional element since the earliest days of railways,
and RAMS as a new concept arising from European regulations.
In this way we can go into greater depth concerning terms relating to Safety
Engineering such as:

between Rolling stock and Track Circuits on Conventional gauge Railway Networks where
the question of TRACK CIRCUIT GAUGE is dealt with.
This section includes lessons deriving from work carried out by ADIF (Both from
the Subdivision of conventional net-work installations as from Subdivision of Trafic
Control Instalations of High Speed Traffic)with CITEF and INECO in the context
of disorders, and I must express my thanks for the information given by Juan de
Dios Sanz Bobi (CITEF) and Manuel Bueso (INECO) like the text Electrical
Generation and Distribution Systems and Power Quality Disturbances by Gregorio
Romero Rey y Luisa Martínez Muneta or several Application Guidelines for
Compatibility between Rolling Stock and Track Circuits.
THE IMPLEMENTATION PROCESS OF ERTMS IN SPAIN has been expanded
and has become a THE EVOLUTION OF SGNALLING INSTALATIONS IN
SPAIN.
- Regarding the language part, The linguist Moira Bryson O’Shea as in the 1sted,
has corrected all the aforementioned changes.
I have included the Spanish/English list of terms in 501 in chapters following the
order in which they are read and appear in the book, as well as the Spanish/English
alphabetical lists of all the terms already included in the 1st Edition. These lists
are at the beginning and end of the whole book, in order to facilitate their
consultation.
These three lists make the book work like a dictionary as well as an encyclopaedia
and may serve as a practice sheet for studying vocabulary.
- As for the third aim, the number of photographs has been reduced from 48 to
9 including my own. This has allowed me to add a dossier for each of the
photographers, which I believe will be more gratifying for their excellent work and
my gratitude for their unselfish collaboration.
The final chapter includes the list of photographs.
Another novelty is that if the first edition was funded under the auspices of the
Foundation for the Promotion of Industrial Innovation, who reiterate my gratitude,
this time the 2nd ed. has been funded with the support of the major Spanish
companies in the field of signalling installations and its power supply.
The relationship of these companies then the Index is, and we have included at
the end of the book a dossier in which each company explains its activity.
Regardless of technical collaborations, but the ultimate responsibility of the entire
book is me, not so with these advertising dossier that are the sole responsibility of
the companies themselves.

catenaria
Catenaria.
contacto.

catenary
Catenary.
Part of the copper cable System, laid above the track in the form of a catenary
curve, also called messenger wire. Together with the overhead contact wire,
droppers etc., the Catenary Wire forms the energy collection system for trains'
motive power through their pantograph. In RW jargon, Catenary and/or Overhead
Contact Line, are used to designate the entire Power Supply System for the
pantographs.
DC Traction system.
DC traction flows from substations SS/EE to the trains through the catenary power
supply system. Generally speaking, this system consists of the catenary, reinforcing
feeders and the overhead contact line and is supported by the catenary poles. The
trains' engines collects the current from the overhead contact line through the
pantograph, and this current returns to the negative of the S/E through the track
rails.
Supply feeder.
An overhead voltage line running from a substation to supply electric power to
the catenary. Each feeder is connected to a high speed circuit breaker.
Reinforcing feeder.
An overhead conductor mounted at the pole head or adjacent to the contact line
on/over the support cable's same assemblies, and directly connected to it at
intervals, in order to increase the effective sectional area of the overhead contact
line.

CV 50Hz/Traction DC
(Se Railway Signalling System in the Chapter of General Comments Regarding
Signalling.)
On a track line there are two current systems involved.
1 The direct current Traction system that returns along the track to the Substations
(See dc Traction System)
In order to insulate the AC TC from each other, Insulated Rail Joints (IRJ) are used. Resonated
Impedance Bonds (RIB), which present high impedance for AC signalling and lower for DC
traction, are placed at IRJ points. Like all single-phase electric circuits, the phases must be isolated
from each other and the environment. On a 50 Hz TC this is achieved by insulating the two rails
from each other while the rails in turn are insulated from the sleepers by means of elastic base
plates. In the same way, the sleepers are placed on top of ballast, which serves as ground insulation.
In addition to the rails as conductors, the TC signalling AC, like any electrical circuit, consists of
a transmitter at one end and a receiver on the other, the Disc Track Relay (Bane Relay). On these
single-frequency 50 Hz TC, to prevent the TC transmitter from feeding an adjacent TC, in the case
of the IRJ losing its insulation, the track power supply phases are rotated through 180º degrees, so
that if there is any communication of the IRJ any resulting voltage is approximately zero.

Clear (a signal).
To change a signal from its most restrictive aspect to a less restrictive one.
Safety installations.
Train Control Systems are what are traditionally known as Safety Systems
(consult) or rather Railway Signaling, but in today’s technology they present a
complete range of differentiated systems. (See You differences between Security
and Safety in de chapter of Security concepts and RAMS).
ATC
Automatic train control. The original name given to Cabin Signaling system,
which provides advance voice and light indicators in the cabin, concerning Signal
instructions, with automatic braking if a warning signal is not acknowledged.
An electromechanical version was used by the Great Western Railway in the UK
in 1906. On the London Underground it is called TRAINSTOP (It can be purely
mechanical or electromechanical).

Certainty, certain, guaranty, without risk, confidence in somebody or something.
Feeling of being protected against something not desirable or uncertain like failure,
damage, error, accidents, or harm. It is used without distinction for referring to
persons, possessions, classes, devices or places.
In English, two terms are generally used without distinction: Security and Safety.
The nuance between the two is an added emphasis of Security of being protected
from dangers that originate from hostile action from outside, for example against
criminals.
For example, the security of a building may indicate its ability to protect against

I personally find that for IXT or CTCs, the best configuration is provided
by the MODULAR PARALLEL configuration in REDUNDANT n +1 single
phase and n +1 or n +3 in-triphase, made up by single phase small power
modules both for UPS single-phase and tri-phase. Thus with only two types
of single-phase modules, for example 3 and 5 kVA, both single -phase and
three-phase UPS of 5 to 60 KVA can be configured, which is more than
sufficient power for the most IXT or CTC. The spare parts are minimal and
with immediate repair time. MTBF deteriorates but MTTR is greatly
improved.
ELECTRICAL DISTURBANCES
Electricas disturbances on the train control systems and its electrical Power
Supply Systems affect the Railway operability.
In this section we will discuss the damage caused by HT power supply lines
and for High Speed Overhead Contact Lines in Catenaries, signalling/
telecommunications cables and in nearby Track Circuits of Conventional
Railway lines, as well as damage between Rolling Stock and Track Circuits
on the Conventional Gauge Railway Network.

via

track
Track
A structure consisting of two rails whose slope and relative separation are
maintained by the sleepersand fastenings that are in turn supported on a layer of
ballast of variable thickness. The ballast rests on ballast subbase and the latter
on the Platform; this forms the Infrastructure. In turn the Platform is supported
on the Subgrade.
The track provides support and guidance to the wheels of the railway rolling stock
and can serve as a conductor of the traction and signalling electrical currents.
Sleeper
A supporting element of timber, mass or prestressed concrete, plastic or metal
on which the rails are lain obliquely at the axel of the track, forming the link and
load transmission between these and the ballast.
Track gauge
The minimum distance between the rail head guide surfaces, measured at 15 mm
below the running surface. The Iberian gauge is 1.668 mm and the UIC (IRU)
standard gauge is 1.435 mm.
Ballast
Easily drainable crushed well-defined granular stone layer, extended over the
railway raised área providing elastic settling and lateral bracing for the sleepers.
Typically granite chippings between 1-2 inches diameter are used, although other
materials are not uncommon.
Rail
Contoured steel bar, which together with another equal one parallel, provides
support and guidance to the wheels of railway rolling stock. It can act as a
conductor of the traction and signalling electrical currents.
It consists on one hand of the head or upper running surface, and on the other
hand of the foot of the rail, wider than the head, with a flat lower surface to support
it on the sleepers. The term describing the union of both parts is rail core

The evolution of railway signalling is linked from the beginning to the Traffic
Safety, this being the main component of the rail way offer, together with those:
speed, capability, regularity, confort and price.
We could say that the traffic control and interlocks are the main protagonists of
the evolution of signalling.
The first train to run in the Iberian Peninsula was on October 28th, 1848 between
Barcelona and Mataró stretch.
Private railway companies soon follow: Andalusian, West, North and MZA
(Madrid-Zaragoza-Alicante) which develop their own signalling regulations.
The first signals were provided by Railway Police officers who raised their arms
or adopted the military ‘at ease’ position to indicate either an occupied or free
track, respectively.
Then came the small flags, coloured paddles, oil lanterns etc. Under these
systems the spacing of trains was marked by the elapse of time from the passage of
the last train by the officer’s position.
Evolution led to fixed systems: paddles, mechanical arms and discs mounted on
posts forming Semaphore signals (Semaphore signals were patented in the early
1840s by Joseph James Stevens) manually activated to start with at the foot of the
posts and then by means of transmissions: wired (Saxby – Farmer), fixed bars,
hydraulic, electrical and nowadays via radio with GSM-R.
Electrical transmission was first used to feed the engines moving the mechanical
arms (1880) and thereafter to feed the signal lamps themselves (1920).

IEC 60870-5-101-104
In the past, due to the communication needs and the absence of
Protection relay SenX
a standard, each company created its own communications pro-
tocol. These protocols heavily conditioned the provision of re-
mote and central station. Today they are totally unused for new
works, having adopted the protocol IEC 60870-5-101 or 104
that provides the mechanisms to meet the communication needs
of the remote control of ADIF.
How could it be otherwise, ASE has implemented this system
and its transformer stations are supplied with the remote (RTU)
that supports these protocols.
