Conclusion

Battery - Lithium (5 points)

 Light
 High energy density
 Minimal self-discharge
 No requirement for priming
 Low maintenance
 Variety of types

Capacitor - Tantalum Alloy X (5 points)

 High volumetric efficiency (Capacitance per volume)

 Much cheaper than aluminium electrolytic capacitors
 Can withstand soldering process better
 Typically, strong against stress caused by board deflection

Circuit Board - Organic Polymer (0 points)

 Manufactured using plant material

 Same structural strength as Super PCBs
 No chemical etching required
 Good worker conditions
 Sound environmental policies

Challenges in Selecting Materials

 Battery – after examining the three choices of material for the battery, the team chose Lithium
over Ni CAD II and Nano-Carbon due to their inferior energy densities. This was of great priority
in the design of the mobile phone as the team found it important for the phone to have industry
leading battery life.
 Capacitor – the team decided on using Tantalum alloy X for the capacitors in the design because
Graphene ion-liquid did not meet the needs of the team’s design and the Aluminium polymer
was found to be unsuitable for use in mobile devices as there is a risk of small explosions with
these capacitors in small devices.
 Circuit Board – the team selected the organic polymer for the circuit board as this posed little to
no environmental nor social impacts while being only marginally thicker and having a little more
loss than the Super PCBs
Negative Impacts of Material Choices

Battery - Lithium (5 points)

 Harmful mining process

 Birth defects noted in children
 Pollution of water resources
 Conflict material from militant autocracy of Lithbatisthan
 Profits used to fuel wars with neighbouring countries
 Tens of thousands of civilian casualties

Capacitor - Tantalum Alloy X (5 points)

 Open mining with poor environmental regulation and control

 Massive pollution of water resources leading to poisoning of ecosystems in tribal areas
 Conflict material with mines operated by militias or drug cartel
 Funds war with neighbouring countries
 Tribal communities forced into servitude

Circuit Board - Organic Polymer (0 points)

 Ten percent more loss than Super PCB 2.0

 Ten percent thicker than Super PCB 2.0

 We decided upon our material mix taking into consideration their feasibility for use in a mobile
phone, all while taking note of the negative environmental and social impacts
