1.

) Which will require a greater force: to start the motion of a heavy box or to keep the box moving
with constant speed?

Answer: To start the motion of a heavy box requires a greater force since it has to overcome
both the friction and the inertia of a box. Keeping the box moving with constant speed only
needs to overcome the friction.

2.) Why is it difficult to walk with new leather soles on a polished floor?

Answer: it is difficult to walk with new leather soles on a polished floor because the shoes are
polished as well as the floor which makes the coefficient of the kinetic friction very small and the
person walking with the new leather shoes tends to slip. Once the shoes are used in a more
rough surface, the sole gets rough which increases the coefficient of the kinetic friction.

3.) How can an adjustable inclined plane be used to measure the coefficient of static friction and
coefficient of kinetic friction?

Answer: If an object is placed in an adjustable inclined plane, slowly incrasing the angle of the
plane until the object to move at a certain angle θ. The coefficient of static friction will then be
measured using the formula μs=tan θ. For the coefficient of kinetic friction, the same process eill
be used. However, the object mus be given a little push at each increasing value of θ.

4.) The coefficient of static friction and coefficient of kinetic friction between a refrigerator and the
floor are 0.45 and 0.38, respectively. The refrigerator weighs 1000N, find the horizontal force
needed to a.) start the motion of the refrigerator b.) to keep the refrigerator moving at a
constand speed once it started moving. If a horizontal force of 400N is applied, what will happen
to the refrigerato? In this situation, what is the value of friction?

Answer: a.) (0.45)(1000N) = 450N

b.) (0.38)(1000N) = 380N
(If a horizonal force of 400N is applied, what will happen to the refrigerator)
If the refrigerator is not moving anymore, 400N will not get it moving, however, if the
refrigerator is already in motion, it will accelarate with an accelaration of 0.20m/s².

(In this situation, what is the value of friction?)

If the refrigerator is steady, the frictional force will be the same as the force exerted on it which
is 400N. If the refrigerwtor is moving, the frictional force is 380N.

5.) Explain the usefulness of a parachute for safe landing.

Answer: Using a parachute helps us have a safe landing since we can get the slowing-down
effect that we need. If you fall from an airplane without using a parachute, your body zooms
through the air like a stone. With the parachute, opening it creates more air resistance and
drifting to the ground more slowly and safety.
