CHAPTER 1

INRODUCTION
Introduction

Teaching is one of the most respectable profession and plays a vital role in the development of
society. Dr sarvepalli Radhakrishnan quoted “ A teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to
light the way for others ”.The teachers help students to acquire knowledge, information for their
development and to shoulder the responsibility of taking the nation towards development,
therefore the teachers are considered as the pillars of the society.

Needs are important for everyone , if the needs of teachers are not met, the unrest and
dissatisfaction among teachers will increase which is very unhealthy for not only teachers but
also for students. The job of a teacher requires a major part of day and is also source of
contribution to the society; hence the satisfaction of job is necessary for a teacher as well as
overall well being.

Teachers mould the future generation of the society. They are most intimately in touch
with human lives and their development .The teachers play a major and important role in
molding the students for the future of India. The job satisfaction of this teachers becomes very
important considering the fact that they are the architecture in building the nation. If a teacher is
not satisfied with his work then both quantity and quality of their performance will suffer. These
in turn will affect the development and growth of the country in order to improve the efficiency
of the teachers, definite steps must be taken to satisfy their aspirations and need by evaluating
their job satisfaction.

A systematic evaluation of the job satisfaction of a teacher in an institution provides


factors for improving his efficiency of service. It is the process of delineating obtaining and
providing useful information for judging decision alternatives. By such an evaluation the factors
affecting the job satisfaction of a teacher can be identified for remedial action

Statement of the problem

Kerala has the literacy rate of 91% which is the highest literacy attained in
comparison to any other Indian state with hundreds of colleges out of which more than 80%
are self financing colleges. Thus it is important to have a study on level of job satisfaction
among teachers in self financing colleges are they determine 80% of the populations future.
We are therefore conducting a study choosing the teachers around Kottayam district. Thus the
problem under study is stated as “ A study on the job satisfaction of teachers in self financing
colleges in Kottayam district”

Scope of the study


This study covers teachers from different self financing colleges around Kottayam
district.

Objectives of the study


 To identify the factors that lead to job satisfaction

 To identify the initiatives taken by self financing colleges to increase the level of job
satisfaction

 To find out the level of satisfaction of teachers

Significance of the study
The need of every teacher is independence, recognition, security and new experience. The
relationship of job dissatisfaction and satisfaction

Depends upon what one expects and obtains from one’s job. The ability to meet the needs of
teachers and improve the performance is the job satisfaction and when one is satisfied from
the job, the competencies skills and knowledge is related from one’s behavior therefore the
job satisfaction is very important for productive activities in the college as well as for the
growth of an educational system in the world to know their actual satisfaction level, a survey
will offer a deep understanding on the subject

Period of the study


The present study was conducted for the period of 4 months starting from december 2018 to
march 2019

Methodology
The methodology used for carrying out the report is used as follows:

a)Research design:
this study is an exploratory study to find out the teachers job satisfaction level
through various studies.

b)Type of data source


the study made us of both primary as well as the secondary data. primary data was
collected by using a structured questionnaire and secondary data was collected from
published sources and internet

c)Sample design
Sample design consists of non profitability sampling such as convenience sampling

d)Tools for collecting data


Structured questionnaire are used for collecting primary data. Published reports, documents,
journals, google documents etc. are also used for collecting secondary data.

e)Tools for analysis and interpretation of data
appropriate statistical tools are used for analyzing the collected data, diagrams, graphs, charts
and tables are used for presenting the data in a simplified and attractive manner.

Limitations of the study


1.The data collected from the respondents may or may not be reliable

2.The study is limited to teachers of self-financing colleges around Kottayam district

3.Due to time and other constraints, data could be collected only from a limited number of
people

4.The findings could not be generalized due to size of the sample

Chapter scheme of the report


The entire report is divided into five chapters

Chapter 1-Introduction
This chapter contains an introduction to the area under study , statement of the problem,
significance of the study, objectives, methodology, period of the study, limitation of the study
and the details of chapter scheme in brief manner.

Chapter 2-Theoretical framework


It deals with the details of the chosen subject, and various terms and theory that are related
with the present study under consideration.

Chapter 3-Review of literature


A quick look into the project subject from studies and practices previously conducted by
others.

Chapter 4-Analysis of data


This chapter presents the analysis of data collected using a structured questionnaire. it
explains the data with charts and figures the data is interpreted on the basis of the charts and
tables

Chapter 5-Summary of findings, suggestions and conclusions


This chapter embodies the summary of findings, suggestions and conclusions of the study
