Oropharyngeal tube insertion


- Choose correct tube size & estimate tube length by positioning it next to mouth, the tip should reach
next to the tragus of the ear.

- Insert half with the inner curve & tip pointing up, rotate 180degrees while pushing the rest to prevent
tongue to be pushed back
- Tongue depressor can be used to hold the tongue forward. “
- If patient cannot tolerate the tongue depressor, then it’s probably not needed.”

Nasopharyngeal tube insertion technique


- Choose correct tube size
- Length is estimated. Must run from nares to tragus of the ear.
- Size corresponds w internal diameter. Smaller internal diameter = shorter
- Apply water based lubricant in the airway
- Gently insert tube along floor of nostril into the post. Nostril
- Phlange should just straddle the nares opening
- Tongue depressor can be used

Bag mask ventilation technique


- Size= Nose bridge to space bet. Lower lip and jaw
- Tight cover
- Set O2 to high flow
- Bag is fully inflated
- Secure mask w one hand, hold bag w other
- Elevate patient’s mandible by maintaining tight seal
- 5th = angle
- 3rd and 4th = body
- Index thumb = bag
- Fully squeze bag and observe chest rise
- Allow chest to fall when deflating
- Ventilation must be regular and not fast

- Two person technique


- One holds the head, other squeezes bag
