DISCUSSION

A. Definition of Narrative Paragraph

A narrative paragraph tells a story. Something happens first, second, third, etc. Of course,
narrative paragraphs are used in fiction as a writer describes the unfolding of events, but they are
also found when describing any actual sequence of activity.
The narrative paragraph can be fun to write because you tell a story or relate an event.
Narratives have a beginning, a middle, and an end. Any time you go to a movie or read a fiction
book, you are looking at a narrative. Narrative paragraphs often describe events from the writer's
life.
Narratives relate a series of events that happened (in the past, as a memory), are happening (in
the present), or will happen ( in the future). As with narrative paragraph, we should always use
vivid language, but instead of focussing on a special moment in time as we would when writing a
narrative paragraph. There is usually a conflict of some kind. Some common types of conflict
include:
 Conflict between one person and another person or between groups.
 Conflict between a person and nature.
 Conflict between an individual and the society in which she or he lives.

To understanding the narrative paragraph from various source like according to experts,
definition of narrative paragraph are :

a. Gorys Keraf (2001: 137), the notion of narration is a form of discourse that seeks to tell an
event as if the reader sees or experiences the event itself. Narratives tell more about a dynamic
life in a time series.

b. Atar Semi (2003: 29), narration is a form of conversation or writing that aims to convey or tell
a series of events or human experience based on development from time to time.

c. Widjono H.S (2007: 175), the notion of narration is a description that tells something or a
series of events, actions, circumstances, sequentially from the beginning to the end so that a
series of relationships with each other can be seen.
d. Ismail Marahimin (1994: 93), the notion of narration is a story that is made based on a series
of events / events, in which there are figures who face a conflict.

B. Generic Structure Of Narrative Paragraph

The generic structure of narrative is as follows:

Orientation
The stage of orientation serves as a short introductory remark to the story. It is about the
opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced. Commonly the stage is
indicated by the narrator in expression such as I have an interesting story, this is a special event in
my life, I have an unforgettable experience in my life, this is what happened last week, etc.
The stage of orientation also tells ‘who is who and where’. This is to say that the stage
specifies who takes part in the story. The participants may be human or non-human beings, such as
animals and things. The stage also indicates the location, namely the place where the story takes
place and the time when the story happens. In other words, the stage of orientation specifies the
participants and circumstance of location covering spatial and temporal locations.

Complication
The stage of Complication treats the crisis or climax in the story. This is the part of the story
where something goes wrong and becomes a serious problem. The crisis is of great interest and
suspense. In this part, complication also tell where the problem in the story developed.

Resolution
The Resolution stage explains efforts taken to solve the problem. In here the problems in the
story is solved.

Reoritation/ coda
The stage of reoritation/ coda closes the story by additional remarks. Its also give to us the
lesson from the story.
C. Language Features Of Narrative Paragraph
The language features in Narrative text include the following indicators:
1. Certain nouns, pronouns, animals, and certain things in the story, such as maid, stepsisters,
housework, etc.
2. Adjectives extending noun phrases, such as long black hair, two red apples, etc.
3. Time connectives and conjunctions to make events sequence, such as then, before that, soon,
next, etc.
4. Adverbs and adverbial phrases to show location and time of events, such as here, in the
mountain, happily ever after, etc.
5. Action verbs in past tense: stayed, climbed, jumped, etc.
6. Saying verbs indicating untterance such as said, told, promised, and thinking verbs identifying
the thought, perception or feeling of the characters in the story, such as thought, understood,
felt, seemed, etc.
7. The use of Past Tense.

D. Social Function Of Narrative Paragraph

The social function of narrative genre is to tell a story. The story is commonly constituted by
a number of events in which it is found that something goes wrong. The wrong side of the event
leads to a stage, which is one with great suspense called a crisis or climax in the story. The story
then stages a solution to the problem in the climax. A narrative ends with a solution, either with a
happy or sad ending.
Society is dynamic in the sense that the society is faced to evolution where things happen and
the happenings become the causes to the next events and so forth. The events attract attentions of
human beings as members of the society. As a way of preserving the events, human beings record
them either in oral or written mode and stage them in stories called narratives.
The narratives are passed on from persons to other persons, from one generation to other
generations and from one time to another. Consequently, there have been, are and will be stories or
narratives in the society. As the stories form in the society, they reflect socio-cultural heritages. The
value of narratives is that they indicate views, attitudes or aspirations of the society. In this way,
narrative is regarded as the preservation of culture. Thus, they prevail, remain and maintained in the
society.

CHAPTER III
CLOSING

A. Conclusion
A narrative paragraph tells a story. Something happens first, second, third, etc. Of course,
narrative paragraphs are used in fiction as a writer describes the unfolding of events, but they are
also found when describing any actual sequence of activity.
Narrative paragraph has the generic structure is as follows orientation, complication,
resolution, reoritation/ coda. Beside that, Narraive paragraph usually used the past tense, time
adjectives, adverbs, and so on.
Narrative paragraph also give the readers a moral text. The moral of a story is a lesson that is
taught within the context of a tale, often using an analogy. In general, stories with morals are found
in children's literature or, for adults, inspirational and motivational tales.
In adult literature, it's more common to find parables teaching morals. While fables use
animals with human-like characteristics and inanimate objects as their story actors, parables exclude
anthropomorphized characters. This is a relatively recent distinction, and many older parables do
not follow this rule.

B. Suggestion
