A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN

IN ENGLISH 8

I – Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a. Grasp the proper use of AND and BUT Conjunctions.
b. Point out the correct sentences from faulty sentences.
c. Formulate sentences from the given clauses by using AND and BUT
conjunctions.

II – Subject Matter:
Topic : Two Principal Coordinating Conjunction (and, but)
Reference : DepEd Module: English 8, pp. 105-106
Instructional Materials: Laptop, Projector, Emoticons, Manila Paper,
Marker, Tape and Scissors
Skills : Grasping, Pointing out and Formulating sentences
Values : Relating the value of bridging words, phrases and clauses to
real life situation where we use ourselves to bridge the gap
among family members.

III – Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Review
(Title: “Pictures Similarity”)
Mechanics/Procedure:
The teacher will post picture and will ask the students to give its
similarity in order to recall the last topic which is conjunction.

B. Motivation: (Game)
This game will enhance the students’ critical thinking skills in naming
the connectors used in each questions.
1. Title : “Which is Which”
2. Mechanics/Procedures:
2.1. The teacher will show post on the board a list of words to be
arranged of each group according to the qualities they should
belong
WORDS THAT SHOWS:
+ QUALITIES -- QUALITIES

Ex. Clean dirty


Neat messy
2.2. The teacher will then show the correct answers on the
screen/board.
C. Presentation:
The following activity would help the students discover the coordinating
conjunction they knew through a group activity.
1. Activity
a. Title: “Pick and Place”
b. Mechanics/Procedures:
1.1 The teacher will post list of sentences with conjunctions
AND and BUT
1.2 Students will be regrouped into two. Each group will be
given 10 pieces of smiling emoticons and 10 sad emoticons.
1.3 Each member will choose among the two kinds of
emoticons. They should pick and place the smiling one if the
given sentence is correct and the sad emoticons if they think
the sentence is wrong.
1.4 After the last member, the teacher will ask the students to
seat before the checking of their work.

D. Discussion:

 Ask the students about the things they noticed from the following sentences.

Faye is friendly and humble.


He is intelligent but lazy.
Sharks are dangerous and harmful.

 Teacher will ask the following questions.


1. What qualities does the colored words with red
emphasized in the first sentence? Positive or Negative?
2. How about the second sentence? What qualities does it
emphasized?
3. How about the third one?
4. What is similar between the first sentence and the last sentence?
5. What conjunction was used in the first and the last sentence?
6. If the first and third sentences are correct; then when do we use
AND conjunction?
7. If the second sentence is also correct; When do we use the BUT
conjunction?
E. Application:

The students will be grouped into four. This activity will test their ability to
apply what they have learned.
1. Activity
c. Title: “Place Me where I Belong”
d. Mechanics/Procedures:
1.1 The teacher will post jumbled list of sentences (faulty and
correct one)
1.2 Each group should write their answer on a manila paper.
1.3 Students will have five minutes to accomplish the task.

F. Generalization
 When do we use And and But Conjunction?
 Relating the ideas you have learned from our topic to your life, do you agree
that you can be a bridge to fix the gap or feud between your family members?
How are you going to do it?
IV. Evaluation
A. Read and understand the clauses. Rewrite them using AND or BUT conjunction
to formulate new sentence.
1. The weather was hot today (AND,BUT) I’m feeling cold.
2. He was an extravagant person. (AND,BUT) He is not a spendthrift
person.
3. He was an extravagant person (AND,BUT) He is a spendthrift person.
4. She lost her book (AND,BUT) She didn’t look for it.
5. I am adventurous (AND,BUT) brave when it comes to heights.

B. Decide whether the given sentences are FAULTY or CORRECT. Write FS if the
sentence is faulty and CS if it is correct.

1. The school looks small but clean.


2. I may be worried at the moment and I am happy because of my
friends’ presence.
3. The moon is beautiful and bright.
4. He is brave but intelligent.
5. Her dress is elegant and attractive.

IV. Assignment:

1. When do we use SO and OR Conjunction?


2. Give two examples of sentences for each coordinating conjunction?
