Experiment No 1
Revision of ohm's law and Understanding Concept of RLC for Electrical
Installation Work and Improvement of power factor of an RL series
circuit in parallel with capacitor
Theory:
Ohm’s Law
Georg Simon Ohm demonstrated the relationships we have just seen, and stated them
in his famous law which is: ‘The current in a circuit is proportional to the circuit voltage
and inversely proportional to the circuit resistance, at constant temperature.’
So, we can show Ohm’s law by means of the formula

Power Triangle and Power Factor
The Power Triangle for RL Circuit is shown is fig. below.

The ratio of the kW (true power) to the kVA (apparent power) is called the power factor
(PF):

Single Phase

P = V x I x Cos θ W or kW

Q = V x I x Sin θ VAr or kVAr

S=VxI VA or kVA

Three Phase

P = 3 x Vph x Iph x Cos θ P = √3 x VL x IL x Cos θ W or kW

Q = 3 x Vph x Iph x Sin θ Q = √3 x VL x IL x Sin θ VAr or kVAr

S = 3 x Vph x Iph S = √3 x VL x IL VA or kVA

Procedure:

1. Connect the given circuit as shown in figure above.

2. Switch on the supply and measure the Supply voltage (V), Current through
Inductor (I) and Voltage across resistance and inductance (VR and VL).
3. Repeat the step 2 and 3 for various values of voltages.
4. Draw Phasor Diagram for same using proper scale.
5. Find the vales of resistance, impedance, Inductive reactance, power factor,
