CE3050: BASIC DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES

ASSIGNMENT-3
Date: 9 February 2019 Submission Date: 16 February 2019

1. A double cover butt riveted joint is used to connect two flat plates of 200 mm width and 14 mm
thickness as shown in the figure. There are twelve power driven rivets of 20 mm diameter at a
pitch of 50 mm in both directions on either side of the plate. Two cover plates of 10 mm
thickness are used. The capacity of thejoint in tension considering bearing and shear ONLY,
with permissible bearing and shear stresses as 300 MPa and 100 MPa respectively is?

2. Which one of the following is NOT correct for steel sections as per IS: 800-1984?
i. The maximum bending stress in tension or in compression in extreme fibrecalculated
on the effective section of a beam shall not exceed 0.66 fy.
ii. The bearing stress in any part of a beam when calculated on the net areashall not exceed
0.75 fy .
iii. The direct stress in compression on the gross sectional area of axiallyloaded
compression member shall not exceed 0.6 fy
iv. None of the above
3. Find the efficiency of the lap joint shown in Figure 2 .Given: M20 bolts of grade 4.6 and Fe
410 (E 250) plates are used.

Figure 2
4. Calculate the strength of a 20 mm diameter bolt of grade 4.6 for the following cases.
The main plates to be jointed are 12 mm thick.
i. Lap joint
ii. Single cover butt joint ;the cover plate being 10 mm thick
iii. Double cover butt joint; each of the cover plate being 8 mm thick
5. Two flats (Fe 410 grade steel), each 210 mm x 8 mm , are to be jointed using a 20 mm
diameter, 4.6 grade bolts, to form a lap joint. The joint is supposed to transfer a factored
load of 250 kN. Design the joint and determine the suitable pitch for the bolts.
6. Identify the most effective butt joint (with double cover plates) for a plate in tension from the
patterns (plan view) shown below, each comprising 6 identical bolts with the same pitch and
gauge:

7. A steel flat of rectangular section of size 70 x 6 mm is connected to a gusset plate by three bolts
each having a shear capacity of 15kN in holes having diameter 11.5mm. If the allowable tensile
stress in the flat is 150MPa, what is the maximum tension that can be applied to the flat?

1. Write a Matlab code to determine the lateral loads (Earthquake as well as Wind load)
on various floors of a ten storied building by static analysis (Plan of the structure is
shown in Figure 3).
The code should give the output for any such building located anywhere in India. All
relevant information needed can be assumed. Also, plot the variation of lateral force
along the height of the building.

2. Write a General Matlab code for designing a joint (Lap and Butt joint).
Inputs: Design load, grade of steel plate, Grade of Bolt.
Output: The configuration of the bolted connection (Number of bolts, their location etc
as per IS 800). Also report alternate combinations of the bolts. Find out the efficiency
of the all these combinations.
