Proposed Revision of the Bachelor of Elementary Education Curriculum

Goals of the Curriculum

The Department of Elementary Education strives to develop high quality pre-service teachers for
elementary level through its quality and responsive teacher education curriculum. The Bachelor of
Elementary Education (BEEd) program aims to produce graduates who will obtain passing
percentage consistently higher than the national passing percentage for the following years.
Graduates of this program will be employed in educational institutions, both public and private, in
local and in foreign countries which will showcase their training and professional competence not
only in the local but in global context.

The Program Educational Objectives

Three to five years after graduation, the BEED graduates are:


 Highly skilled professional teachers who are generalists, teaching across different learning
areas in grade school levels, possessing mastery of the content knowledge and ability to
apply developmentally appropriate pedagogy, positive use of Information and
Communication Technology (ICT) and various methods in teaching and learning process;
 Licensed professional teachers in their chose field of specialization who are knowledgeable
of providing a safe, secure, fair and supportive learning environment that are adaptive for
learners’ diversity;
 Informed educators who possess adeptness in the interaction of international, national and
local curriculum requirements and to translate curriculum content into learning activities
in which assessment data is used to inform and enhance the teaching and learning process
and;
 Successful educators who are well-equipped with professional, social, and personal
competencies, demonstrating the highest degree of professionalism through upholding
professional ethics, accountability and transparency to promote harmonious relationship
and assumes responsibility for personal growth and professional development.

Constraints and Other Factors

The Department of Education (DepEd) is in its full implementation of the K to 12 Enhanced


Curriculum and adopted the Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST), formerly the National
Competency-Based Teacher Standards (NCBTS). With these premises, in the pursuit of providing
highly equipped pre-service teachers that are responsive to changes of local, national, and
international curriculum requirements, competencies required thereof and professional growth and
development for life long education, and based on the Policies, Standards and Guidelines issued
by the CHED through its CMO No.74 s. 2017, the revision of BEEd program is hereby proposed.

This proposal seeks to revise the BEED curriculum primarily to meet the requirements of the
CHED, the PPST, the PQF, 21st Century Philippine Teacher Education framework and the pursuit

of the institution to become a research university necessary to enhance the program so it can
produce well-trained, highly motivated, and professionally qualified graduates with in-depth
understanding of the context of education, and the pressing demands and concerns inevitable to an
ever-changing educational landscapes.

Highlights of the Revision

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) is an undergraduate teacher education degree


program designed to prepare individuals intending to teach in the elementary level. It aims to
develop highly motivated and competent teachers specializing in the content and pedagogy for
elementary education. After successful completion of all academic requirements of the degree/
program, graduates of BEEd should be able to practice the teaching profession in the elementary
level.

The proposed program will exceed the minimum number of units and requirements prescribed by
the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd). Addition of enhancement courses such as (1)
Grammar for Teachers, (2) Art Education, and (3) Rudiments of Music to further enhance the
capacity of students in taking the major courses and implementation of processes in teaching-
learning episodes. Another (4) research subject will also be included to strengthen the students’
capacity to conduct researches as the department recognizes and adheres to the aim of the
university to become world-class national research university. This course will provide the
students with in-depth understanding of different research methods in the field of education.

Grammar for Teachers. This course will introduce students to a perspective on English grammar
that is intended to support effective teaching and learning. It will concentrate on aspects of English
grammar that are commonly used in classroom instruction, helping teachers develop greater
understanding and mastery of English Language as medium of instruction.

Art Education. This course integrates electronic and non-electronic style of arts. This introduces
various art forms currently used in teaching. It leads to an understanding and appreciation of the
elements of art and familiarity with the principles of the arts and their relation to everyday
problems with emphasis on indigenous art form. It includes fine arts and minor arts. Students are
required to submit portfolio of their works.

Research. This course examines concepts, theories, methods, and ethics in Educational Research.
Students are given the opportunity to learn various types of research such as Historical,
Descriptive, and Experimental. Using a quantitative approach, students are required to formulate
research proposal in their own field of interest as their final output.

Rudiments of Music. This course offers students the fundamental concepts of music: the primary
and secondary elements. Based on the outcomes-based context, students are given opportunities
to read or create music, perform in an ensemble, and learn to formulate objectives for teaching and
learning general classroom music.
