CHAPTER 1
Introduction

In this world communication is important, the standard methods of

communication are speaking or writing by a sender and listening or reading the

message. Language have many variety but our universal language is English. In order

to communicate in other country we need to know how to speak English. Language also

explore the nature in oral communication and its art that embodies the four aspects of

language development which is reading, listening, writing and most specially in

speaking. In order to have great fluency. Communication is the symbolic inter-action of

two or more persons if communication is to occur, some stimulus must be receiver of

the message must give it his attention, and the massage must be intelligible. It may or

may not be correctly understood, but it must make sense.

In-order to have some control of our communication environment and its effects

upon you, you must learn to understand as completely as possible how it works, and

you must develop maximum skills at affecting it. Effective communication requires

sensitivity and skill that can come only from careful study of communication process and

an awareness of what others doing as communicate. It also requires a great deal of

understanding of other people. As a matter of fact learning to communicate effectively

means, in large part learning to understand what causes other people to behave as they

do.

Cainta Catholic College is the only one Catholic school here in the province of Rizal

that has a Nursery School, Elementary School, High School, and also a College

Department, and this research we want to know how the English Major speak fluently in
terms of communication skills and there majors subject. We conduct this researchers to

aim our purposes in this study.

Background of the study

English was widely accepted in the world as an active universal language. It is

considered by people studying English as their personal skills. Hence many people

nowadays, especially students, should master English. It is valuable asset for the

students. The students can improve themselves both by mastering the language.

According to Chaney (1998:3), “speaking is the process of building and sharing

meaning through the use of verbal and non verbal symbols in a variety of contexts.

Speaking is a crucial part of second language learning and teaching.” It means students

should be able to communicate with the others to get or to share information and to

express what they feel.

English proficiency, both speaking and writing are becoming more important in the 21st

century. But in fact, many students get anxious when they are faced on speaking. They

confess that actually, they have gotten the ideas in their mind, but they feel difficult to

express it orally. It is caused whether by being nervous, confused because of less

vocabulary, shy, or other factors. Most of them always get anxious when they are asked

by teacher to speak in front of the class. Even if they have to choose between writing

and speaking, they prefer to choose writing. In their opinion, in writing test they probably

can answer the question by guessing even though their own answer is false, the

examiner will not judge them directly. It makes them feel save more. But in speaking,
they will be directly faced by the examiner or audiences. It makes them get nervous

more as if what they will speak is false whether from the language structure, ideas, or

others.

Theoretical Framework

Communication skills in English major is the study of our theory is the discipline that

studies the principles of transmitting information and the methods by which it is

delivered. It is an attempt to explain how and why humans communicate meaningfully

with each other . At its core, a communication theory is generally devoted to providing

an explanation of how exactly, one individual is able to communicate meaning to

another and the degree to which the speaker and the listener can understand each

other. In an era where Communication skills in English Major language is being

globalized, people are often judged by the way they speak the language. Therefore,

poor speakers are tagged as incompetent and uneducated. Hence, these speakers

experience social isolation among the natives or the good speakers of English, face

employment difficulties and find very limited opportunities for higher studies. People

should not only know the language well, but must know how to use it communicatively

also, in order to interact with the English speakers. Singh (2005) says that for gaining

basic command of the language, a teacher must: · favor such teaching programme that

meets the L2 learners’ specific needs. · Use such teaching activities which the learners

think are useful for them. · Follow such approach in teaching that has flexibility. (p. 18)

Further, the author states that if teaching exists in a communicative learning context

then there should be a sharing of responsibilities not only between a teacher and the
students, but also among students. According to Gefen (1989a), “if communication is

the aim of teaching, then communication must be the means of learning” (as cited in

Singh, 2005, p. 26). It is considered that if students get the opportunity to develop

fluency in the English speech while they are pursuing their academics, it would really be

a very beneficial effort for them from various perspectives.

CHAPTER 2

Review of Related Literature

Generally, communication can be defined as a process of exchanging information, from

the person giving the information through verbal and non-verbal methods, to the person

receiving the information. The most common method of communication is verbal, using

a specific language where is it two-way process, with feedback on the message

received. Communication also involves the exchange of ideas, opinions and information

with a specific objective. Apart from oral communication, information can also be

exchange using symbols or signage. Communication has also been defined as sharing

and giving meaning occurring at the same time through symbolic interactions (Seiler &

Beall, 2005). Communication has been said to start when a message or information is

transferred from the sender (the speaker, writer) to the receiver (listener, reader)

through an instrument or channel, and followed by the receiver giving feedback (coding

and interpreting the information; Sulaiman Masri, 1997). Based on these definitions,

elements of communication include the person giving the information, the information

and feedback by the receiver, and the repetition of these processes creates knowledge

development.

Previous research on communication skills among university students have been

reported by Ihmeideh, Ahmad and Dababneh (2010) and Cleland, Foster and Moffat

(2005). They found that a positive communication environment provides opportunities to

students to learn how to communicate, and thus, have better communication skills.

Therefore, university students need to be given opportunities to communicate in order to

be better prepared for the job market studies. Communication is more effective if the
receiver (of the information) can understand and practice the skills. Further,

communication will be more meaningful if the physical, spiritual and social factors are

taken into account during the communication process.

an element, until the required number is obtained. That is, researcher applied
sampling with replacement. Proportionate stratified random sampling was
employed to select __ of English major students in college department . The

was not good when it comes to communication.
