Once upon a time there was a 16- year –boy in a small city in northern England,
who decided that rugby was not his sport but basketball was. John Amaechi and his
mother knew that American National Basketball Assocation was the top of the sport and
dreamed that one day he would get into one of the teams. This has never been done by an
Englishman and seemed so impossible that it was almost a fantasy.
However, he studied hard to get to an American university. He also trained hard
and was accepted by Manchester United junior basketball team. The MU junior coach
says that it was more John`s will than his talent which kept him on the team. He went on
trying even when things went wrong. And he grew to 6ft 9 ins( 2m 5cm) , a useful height
even in the USA , the land of giants.
In America he studied clinical child psychology and spent six years in and out of
the school and university basketball teams. He had a personal trainer and kept working
out even when he wasn`t in a team.
This year four NBA teams offered him a place in their `rookie` camps. He
decided to go to Cleveland. There were 18 `rookie` and just one new player need on the
team. By the time the season began that one player had been chosen – John Amaechi, the
boy from the small city in northern England.
