Q2 - Do you think you possess Grit? What made you say you possess this quality?
theres so many years that lie ahead of me, na parang I feel that theres always still a
chance to sort of get to where I wanna get to
I think what you’ve experienced before (...) sobrang totoo yung mga cliché na sinasabi
nila na parang kung sobrang sama ng nangyari sayo, you're bound for breakthrough. Like
something’s gonna happen talaga that’s going to change you or help you go wherever
youre supposed to go.

Its its more of it really leads you to somewhere. I think that’s grit, parang keeping yourself
focused lang, never losing hope--for me that’s grit.

they always speak about grit then they say moving forward and stuf
like I have done several things in the past that I think I would not have finished without
that faith

until now it gives uhm it gives direction

it uhm refreshes my mind into what I wanted to do or what I wanted to achieve.
but in the end uhmm its what drives you forward
Because I’m a goal-getter
I see to it that ee--everything that I want, I get.

And everything that I uh set my target on I make sure I deliver.

Because I have a plan

Talagang di ako sumusuko lalo na nung ang mga bata eh nag-aaral pa.

Noong nag-aaral pa ang mga bata, talagang pursue nang pursue, may mapagkakitaan
lang.

Nahihirapan na din ako magbyahebyahe, pero andun padin.

Ang number one na kinakwan naming ngayon yung meron lang kaming pansupply sa tao,
dahil kung isasara naming to ngayon, kawawa ang mga tao.

Kaya lang kung minsan ang tinitignan ko din yung mga tao kong minemaintain. Kawawa
naman sila dahil ang tagal na sa akin ng mga yan. Sila ang katulong kong nagpalago diyan.
Minsan nga pag sinasabihan ko sila na gusto ko nang magsara, san sila pupunta, yun ang
kwan ko.
Gusto ko eh habang kwan sana mabigyan ko rin, kung ano yung mga nabigay ko sa mga
anak ko eh mabigay ko din sakanila dahil sila ang katulong kong nagpaganyan.
Kaya lang tuloy parin yung trabaho ko kahit nahihirapan na nga ako.

Merong time naman na kailangan mo nang huminto eh di ka parin nakapagpapahinga,

inaabot ka padin ng gabi, dahil ang passion mo na nga eh makwan lang sana yan.

At the age of 58, 25 pa ako nung simula akong magbusiness. Parang katagal na.

Ni hindi ako nakalibot, andyan lahat ng panahon ko.

Walang gustong tumake-over sa business. Nandiyan yung challenge kako eh. Nabuhay ko
kayong lahat dahil diyan. Napagaral ko kayong lahat dahil diyan.

Sa isang negosyo kasi yun bang exact capital, exact income. Para bang walang challenge.

Ang challenge diyan eh nandun sa utang. Magloan ka. Gusto mong mapalago mapalaki
negosyo mo, magloan ka.

Andun ang challenge eh dahil sa loan mo na yon papano mo babayaran yun.

Kaya dapat ipursue mo yung business mo.

Kung pwede pa, magbranch ka sa ganito, magbranch ka sa ganyan.

Yun bang bukas eh may babayaran ako, next month may babayaran ako, magiisip ka kung
anong source na pwede mong gawin para pangcover up dun sa ganito.

Sa business madami kang makikilalang mga bigtime na tao, supplier na malalaki, bibigyan
ka nila ng challenge.
Nasubukan ko magpunta hanggang Ilocos, nararating ko yan, nagdedeliver kami diyan
dahil sa business na binigay sayo.

Nagtinda ako ng bigas, farm supply, na wala akong capital ni singko.

Konti konti palang sa umpisa, kukuha ako ng 50 bags na bigas, o pataba na 100 bags.
Hindi naman nila idedeliver kung ganon lang ang kukunin mo eh. Pick upin mo.
Magdedeliver sila kunwari lowest 500 bags. Syempre ako ang kukuha non. Ang layo pa ng
daan noon. Tas babalik ka hapon na. Pupunta ka ng umagang umaga. Ganun kami
nagsimula noon.
Dahil ayaw nga nila magdeliver kung 50 50 lang ang bibilhin mo. Sabi nung may-ari yung
100 na bibilhin mo dagdagan natin ng 100.
Nagumpisa ako sa nagtakal ng uling, ng darak na kadumi dumi. Pero nandun ang pera.
Kung ano yung business na madumi nandun ang pera.
Pero salamat pala at umalis ako. Kung di ako umalis, siyempre ganun din ako. Saka ka
lang magkakapera pag magreretire ka na.
Ito gusto ko nang bitawan na ayoko eh. Kasi naumpisahan ko na eh. Ang hirap
magumpisa. Sa lahat ng bagay ang hirap magumpisa. Tapos susukuan mo lang

sumusuko. Si God laging nandyan lang para samin.

Kung di ka naman mananalig sa kakayahan mo bilang isang tao , negosyante, o ano pa

mang mangyayari sa buhay mo kailangang harapin mo

Yung pangarap mo na kahit mahirap kailangan mong abutin dahil gusto mo din ng
magandang buhay.
Para sa mga anak. Para yung di naming natikman, na kapares ko nga, di ako nakapagtapos
ng pag-aaral, eh pinatikim ko sa mga anak ko.
Sige parin maabot lang naming ang pangarap naming hindi para sa sarili naming, para
nalang sa mga anak namin.
Gaya nalang nung kala ko katapusan ko na noon. Sa awa ng Diyos eh nalampasan ko
naman.
Tuloy parin ulit ang takbo ng buhay naming kahit na anong hirap nakakaraos naman.
Kung halimbawa eh di na ako nakasurvive o gumaling sa naging sakit ko noon eh siguro
eh di ko na rin maaano yung iba pang mga pangarap ko.
Natupad ko din yung mga pangarap ko sa mga anak ko, nakapagtapos sila sa
pamamagitan ng pagsisikap naming mag-asawa.
Galing ako sa mahirap, syempre gusto ko umangat.
Syempre gusto ko din magkaroon ng magandang buhay.
Kaya kahit maaagang maaga gumigising na para magtrabaho lang.
Yang ginagawa ko nga, pagtitipid, pagtitiyaga. Para makamit mo yung gusto mo.

Kung wala ka nung passion tatamarin ka eh, tatamarin ka dun sa lahat.

kung wala ka nung goal, tatamarin ka eh
focus in life ba pare
paggising mo sa umaga, bakit ka nga ba gumigising sa umaga
natrain kami na may target goal ka talaga lagi
Anong kailangang mga factors na yan pagsasama-samahin mo
kung walang purpose in life yung, tulad ko, purpose in life ko yung mga anak ko
dahil dun sa ganung mindset ko, lalo kong inaano (pinupursige)
kailangan gumising ako ng maaga matulog ako ng maaga
magtrabaho ako para atleast may pera ng konti
purpose in life ko yung mga anak ko, so yun lang pagkanaayos ko sila, okay na ako
meron kang purpose para sa kanila para makaachieve manlang sila
sariling sikap
sariling ano na, experience
maganda ako makisama
pinagaralan ko yung situasyon ng Suki Market, dun ko nakita yung mga hinahanap ng tao
sa kakanin
pangarap ko na mas umano okay na sakin yung binigay ng Diyos na ganito eh, pwedeng
ipamana sa mga anak ko

Kailangan talaga marunong kang humawak ng tao

Number one pakikisama sa tao, diba
kailangan maging matatag ka
Kaya ako nagpursige, hindi lang basta kumita ka eh
Kinuha ko agad, di na ako nagisip, oo agad ang sagot ko
ang pangarap ko talaga ay magkaroon kami ng sarilng lupa at bahay dito na matitirahan
flexible ako na kapag kailangan ako
nung naghiwalay na kami dumiskarte na ako nang sarili ko
umpisa ako lang magisa
kasi yung mga pangarap ko nagawa ko naman
yung ang pangarap ko naman talaga noon ay magkaroon ng sariling bahay at lupa
kung kailanganan, okay lang gumastos kahit malaki
kung hindi naman masyadong kailangan sa buhay, di ako gumagastos
kumokonsulto din ako minsan sa kanya minsan nagtatanong-tanong ako kung paano ba
challenge sa amin sa family to work hard
since alam mo yung pinagmulan mo, yung relationship mo with other people hindi mo
sila tinitignan na mababang uri
It was a brave decision
yung trust nila binigay samin
Uh I think so I possess the quality because i grew up with a parents that are like inclined
with business
They never went in to like uh--they never work as an employee.
So all their lives they've been working as like businessman and businesswomen.
My mom and dad they were helping each other
So they went in to do a lot of diferent kinds of uh businesses like uh garments.
Importing and importing garments, uh yeah production of garments uh they were also
into renting out uh garments.
Uh we also had several uh restaurants uh one that’s already currently uh one is currently
running. One was like running for 10 years.

And then we decided to close down because the space that was furnished was ah it
didn’t renew the lease anymore so we decided to close it down. But it was working good.

And the recent one that we had was ah the food park which we were renting out and we
were operating the bar so that we could make double profits for like uh were already
renting out the place and we're also operating the bar
Which we alone were entitled to or exclusively sell the drinks so it’s a good--it was a good
idea.
Although we--it was easily copied so we decided to change it to reconceptualize it,
basically. Yeah.
So this whole business mindset runs through the family. Yeah. The business mind set runs
with the family because
Like me I have an experience like ah working as an employee because I.
Way way back when I was like young we were already trained to do businesses

Like when I was still studying I was like selling to my classmates and then. So this kind of
mind start thinking was like it honed me to be the entrepreneur that I am right now.

Like ah the way I think, how I see things I see opportunities in a lot of things.
When you ofer me something I can try to sell it
Because like ah I yeah this by having an open mind
And seeing things from an out of the box perspective that how you can profit from this
opportunity is like yeah.
So I mean it’s not just. It doesn’t really come overnight. It is by years of training I was like
uh-- I operated the restaurants. I also went into buying and selling of cars.
I mean basically everything that you can sell the weirdest things that I sold
So my dad was like buying it from,--Uh for me he was the capitalist, but he bought it for 3
pesos a piece. So we bought like a hundreds of spiders. Sold it to my classmates. I was
selling it for 15 pesos --15 to 20 pesos a piece.
Actually at an early age I wasn’t really trained by my parents in receiving money.
They taught me how to make money so I'm not really used to like asking for money. If I
want something I should know how to get it. Or I should know how to make the money
to get it. Something like that.
Yeah actually I love it. I mean I enjoy because I for me business is life
uhh not really I’m because when like you have a business right they say it’s like a seven to
seven days a week job. Because like you need to be on your toes.
You need to watch over your business every time, but then on the other hand you also
have your time. I mean you’re in--you have more time. It’s like it’s also about time
management

And how you would manage your resources your people.

You need to find good people. Need to put good people first
and where they should be. So they would at least you would know they they like where
they are and then you know how they work.
They would if you give them what they like, they would enjoy what they're doing and of
course it’s a give and take. Like ah they would run your business for you.
Ah well of course there's a lot of challenges like uh there's a lot of challenges especially
like in the Philippines where when you’re starting a small business it is okay. But when
you go into a big scale of business a lot of people would notice.
but then yeah there are a lot of challenges I mean especially when you’re starting but
you just need to do it.
Or you just need to. Because some people would say I’m scared to do business I'm scared
to do this. But [you] just need to do it. You need to try it. Cause if you won’t try it. You
wouldn't know.
And they would tell you would have a lot of negative sides along the way. Like when it
might not work, I mean you just need to try it.
In everyday life. Everyday. Even everything has risk.
So you would take on risk but you need to have calculated risks.
You need to look at your pros and cons and you would at least weigh if your positive sides
are more than the negative sides.
Then I mean I think there’s like businesses that--If you are inclined into business you
would already see if the risk are manageable.
Risks are manageable but uh if they're more positive than the negative then I think it’s a
manageable risk and it’s a good prospect.
And you're not afraid to take on these things, Since you know that calculated risk.
Yeah cause of it’s a calculated risk there's still fear. Because it’s like sometimes you win
sometimes you lose.
But you just need to do it. You just need to try.
Well yes I do have that quality. Without grit you won’t get anywhere with-without it. So
it’s--you need to have the passion within you
the stamina in everything to keep you going.
I started out with parts of the, I don’t know if you still remember the Harrison plaza, I
used to supply parts of the bump cars and after that I went to springs, and after that I
went to arts. So one thing led to another
Yeah yes, it’s something like business within me.
Yes, and you need to like what you're doing.
And you need to you need to survive-- Ah you need to survive, you need money. You
need money to survive, so you have to work.
It’s like being an employee also wherein you go to the office every day. Well, same thing
and in business you have to manage the business.

You have to see to it that everything’s okay. Your employees and everything.

Okay, but uh you have to overcome everything.

where in entrepreneur you have to be creative
you have to think a lot
you have to ah you must have the passion on the things that you want to establish. Okay,
kasi yun yung pinaka importante pag nag negosyo ka.
Okay, dapat passionate ka dun kasi pag hindi ah it will be difficult to succeed.
Why? Because you have to put a lot of efort.
Because mga passion nila yun eh. Ako ang passion ko talaga business
So basically if you need to create a business, okay you must be passionate.
So alam mo, okay. And, what you’re getting into.
Second, ah you learn to cope up with failures
because failures you learn from it.
but ang importante you learn from those mistakes.
Okay, and isa pa na very crucial dun sa binanggit mo nga na grit ay yung determination.
na kailangan mo ay yung continuous education.
You must be determined to continue to learn. Okay.
Hindi, kunyari businessman ka, importante you learn to study.
Continuous study, okay.
Ngayon kapag nag set up ka ng sarili mo negosyo you have to combine marketing
operations hr yung course niyo diba psycho more of sa hr yan, okay, and of course yung
admin.
So after maset up yung business then nag enroll ako masteral sa AIM, so continous
learning.
Okay, after mong grumaduate ng masteral, continous learning pa rin.

So kapag may mga seminars na available or nakikita mo na may kulang ka let’s say sa side
ng operation, side ng admin, side ng hr, people management, then you have to learn.

You have to study.

Being a business man continous yan.
Especially right now importante is yung knowing the trend.
so from that ibig sabihin kami as etrepreneer kailangan sumunod kami dun sa group ng
telcom
So continously you have to learn this technology,
you have to continue to research, you have to continue to study, okay
and of course we have to get partners dun sa industry na yun foreign.
To be a systems integrator, you have to have good partners.
So with that you have to continue learning.
Yeah you have to communicate with them.
You have to be knowledgeable to understand
You have to continue to learn
So uhh yung importante you have to passionate
tapos continuous learning ka dun sa ano dun sa not only dun sa industry mo okay. Pati sa
ibang industry okay.
Ang importante sa pagiging negosyante ay marunong ka bumasa.
visionary sila eh.
ang entrepreneur kasi capable sila to see kung ano yung trend
and yung potential opportunities.
And from these opportunities okay you have to look at possible businesses.
have to know kung ano yung opportunity
pero ahh importante dun sa opportunity na yun papasukin mo yung nakikita mo.
tsaka syempre passionate ka.
so It’s a matter of positioning kasi

Yeah actually those are the things that I learned from him.

but sometimes you have to look on how to position it properly.

Yung oferings mo yung produkto mo, yung services mo. Very crucial kung paano mo siya
ipoposition dun sa customer.
Like kami sa telco siya yung mga customer namin, So kanino mo ibebenta yung product.
Okay, kanino mo i oofer yung product
so yun ang very important where to position your product.
ang pinaka importante dun is maintaining the service quality.

Yun yung opportunity na nakita namin.

So may gap, you saw the gap.

So you see the gap? Andun yung gap,

we saw that opportunity

and we grabbed the opportunity.

Yeah that’s why yung entrepreneur dapat mabilis kang pumick up ng opportunity. Yun
yung opportunity eh.
What’s currently happening,
eh sakto naman passion namin yun kasi ece kami tatlo kami partners.
kasi yun pa mga risk taker ang mga entrepreneur.
Okay and of course being entrepreneur you have to be creative
Parang you have to be imaginative
So yung nakuha namin commission dun di namin tinago di namin ginasta di namin
pinambili ng kotse. Yung nakuha namin na commision dun sa swiss company kasi may
commision dun yun yung pinang invest namin.

Nakagenerate na kami ng mga network.

So alam na namin yung sabi ko sayo importante positioning,
Oo san ipapasok. San ioofer.
nagplano kami.
Risk but of course sabi nila sa entrepreneur risk taker
but calculated risk.
Okay, before kami mag resign dun sa company namin we made sure na may contact na
kami tapos ah enough lang yung capital namin.
Okay, so ibigsabihin it doesn’t matter kung magkano kami nagstart ng ano,
ang importante is alam mo yung passion mo.
Alam mo yung gagawin mo.
Alam mo posisyon mo.
And then you continue to learn,
ah bumibenta na, so hindi kami umupo dun lang sa services. Kasi taga install taga-
engineer ng mga equipment.

Ayun, kasi diba yun yung opportunity.

Nung may pera na kami, iniikot namin how we did it
ano ginawa namin nung nakakolekta na kami alam namin na later on kailangan namin
mag up in terms of knowledge.

Then nagaaral kami on how to operate.

Project management nagenroll kami dun.
So magaaral ka.
Okay so dun palang ang pinaka crucial pala sa business yung finance.

Like i think yung mga tauhan palang, kung like mag iinvest ka sa kanila. Meron kang tao
na ano na.
Yung fourth aspect, okay, yan yung course mo. HR. Human resource.

Human management. Why? Because ang nagpapatakbo ng negosyo mo di lang naman

ikaw. Tao mo. How you manage your people okay is very important.

Build rapport, okay

Una, yun nga sinasabi ko nandun na yung be ready ka sa anu mang mag strike na disaster
sa business mo.
So nandun yung pagka risk taker mo.
So kailangan talaga medyo malakas ang loob mo. Kung whatever na maranasan mo sa
business
may fluctuation kasi yan eh. Sometimes patikimin ka lang ng maganda. So dont expect na
continue ang flow niyan. So meron ding time na nagdodown siya.
So gaya ng sinabi ko, kailangan mo talaga maging risk taker ka.
So if you think na di ka ready, siguro di para sayo ang passion na yun.
Since nung maliit pa ako, although di ko pa din naman masyado naintindihan, basta ang
alam ko magbebenta ng rice, magdedeliver. Yun ang alam ko.
Pero paunti-unti parang dun ko na nalearn na ay ganito pala yun. Tapos nakakatulong
yun,
Nung nangyari pa lang yan, ineexpect mo palagi kung lagi sa other side ang failiure. Hindi
lang always ang success.
Ang talagang isipin mo "ay okay ito-okay ito."
So be ready ka diyan ang napagaralan ko din na once na gusto mo pumasok bilang
entrepreneurship, be ready ka.
Risk taker ka.
