Teachers
Custodial Staff
□ “Duck and Cover”, wait for tremors/danger to pass or “all
clear/evacuate” command.
□ Evacuate when safe – do not wait for announcement as system may
be down!
□ If possible, gather the following before evacuating:
o Custodial District Radio
o Phone, purse, jackets
o Lunches, backpacks
o Keys, disaster bags
□ Report to disaster shed to assist with search and rescue.

Pre-Emergency
□ Become familiar with emergency shut-offs – gas, water, electricity
□ Develop and post evacuation route and assembly area for each room and
use area.
□ Designate the location of the command post, assembly areas, and morgue.
□ Assign staff to emergency teams.
□ Review and update emergency plan.
□ Conduct drills putting emergency team into full operation.
□ Survey school on an annual basis for potential hazards.
During Emergency
The command post is responsible for the overall management of all incident activities.
Pre-Emergency
□ Become familiar with school emergency plan and procedure for student
release.
□ Establish procedures for evacuating essential school records during an
emergency.
□ Know and understand team functions and prepare to assist other teams, if
necessary.
□ Establish proper procedure for handling student emergency information
during an emergency.
During Emergency
Student release will be responsible for the orderly release of student to responsible adults.
Pre-Emergency
□ Become familiar with school emergency plan and procedure for student
release.
□ Survey school building to identify and correct non-structural hazards.
□ Maintain inventory of emergency equipment.
□ Know and understand team functions and prepare to assist other teams, if
necessary.
o Locate and become familiar with utility shut-off procedure
o Locate and become familiar with water storage and proper
preservation in emergency situation.
During Emergency
Search and Rescue will be responsible for searching campus, rescuing injured students/adults,
and reporting findings to incident commander.
Pre-Emergency
□ Become familiar with school emergency plan and procedures for caring for
the injured.
□ Regularly inventory all first aid supplies.
□ Plan for special medical needs of students and staff.
□ Conduct first aid and medical self-help course for students and staff.
During Emergency
Triage/First Aid will be responsible for assessing injuries and reporting to command center.
Pre-Emergency
□ Become familiar with school emergency
□ Know and understand team functions and prepare to assist other teams, if
necessary.
□ Establish proper procedure for handling student area.
During Emergency
Triage/First Aid will be responsible for assessing injuries and reporting to command center.
Sanitation
Pre-Emergency
□ Predetermine where pits are to be dug.
During Emergency
□ After it is determined that personnel will be retained as school site, dig
the pits as follows: 3-4 feet long, 24-30 inches deep, as narrow as
possible.
□ Leave dirt piled nearby. After use, throw in a small amount of dirt.
□ If lime is available, throw in 1-2 shovels per day.
□ Small children will need assistance and assurance.
Morgue
Pre-Emergency
□ Pre-designate area for placement of potential fatalities. This should be
far removed from the central area.
□ Prepare covering. This may be large plastic bags, either intact or cut
open for tarps.
□ Have available 3x5 index cards and pins for identification.
During Emergency
□ Should fatalities occur, all bodies should be removed immediately to the
morgue area.
□ Identify and pin card with name of victim and date to front of the
clothing.
□ Cover victim completely and weigh down covering.
□ Keep all unauthorized persons away from area.
Water
If water mains are broken at any point from the source of supply to the point of
delivery, the water is contaminated. Water purification material should be stored
along with other emergency supplies. The Red Cross suggests a minimum of 1
quart of water as a minimum need per person per day. Careful use of this water,
even rationing, must be considered.
Helicopter Area
(The Day Custodian – from Lomitas will be in charge of this area – track)
Each school site should identify a CLEAR area for helicopter landing, measuring
100 x 100 feet. The must be clear of trees, buildings, wires, poles, or an
obstruction for landing. The area must be marked with an “X” which can be made
from any white material (paint, flour, lime, toilet paper).
