Conventional coal-fired power plants, which make water boil to generate steam that activates a turbine, have
efficiency of about 32%. Supercritical power plants operate at temperatures and pressures above the critical point of
water, i.e. above the temperature and pressure at which the liquid and gas phases of water coexist in equilibrium.
This results in higher efficiencies ± above 45%. Supercritical power plants require less coal per megawatt-hour,
leading to lower emissions (including CO2 and mercury), higher efficiency and lower fuel costs per megawatt.

Ñ.Sahara India Power Corp Ltd, a Ñ % subsidiary of Sahara India's real estate arm Sahara
Prime City Ltd, has signed an MoU with the Orissa government for setting up a Ñ32 mw coal-
fired thermal plant in Orissa. The project investment is likely to be Rs 5,6 4 crore. The proposed
plant in Orissa is planned to be set up through joint venture participation with power companies
from different parts of the world.

It will be built on Ñ,5 acres at Orissa s Turla Tehsil of Balangir district. The Turla plant is
planned to commission its first 66 mw unit by February 2 Ñ3 while the second unit of identical
capacity is expected to be commissioned within 6 to 8 months thereafter.

O BGR Energy inks pact with Orissa for 1,320 MW power plant
Power equipment maker BGR Energy said on Friday it has signed a pact with Orissa government to set up a Ñ,32
MW power plant at an estimated investment of Rs 6287 crore.

The power plant, which is coming up at Bhapur in Nayagarh district in Orissa, would be set up through a special
purpose vehicle and the state government will assist the project with land acquisition, water and mandatory
clearances and also facilitate allotment of captive coal blocks, the Chennai-based company said in a statement.

The project would be commissioned in 54 months and the Orissa government would be entitled to buy Ñ2-Ñ4 per cent
of the out put from the plant, while BGR Energy is free to sell the remaining power within or outside the state.
3. Adhunik Power and Natural Resources Ltd plans to set up a 1320 Mw Independent Power Producer (IPP) at
Birmaharajpur in Sonepur district. It would entail an investment of Rs 4000 crore. The project, which intends to come
up over 1000 acres of land, would use super critical technology.

4. JSL Limited (formerly Jindal Stainless Limited) part of the O P Jindal group, the largest and fully integrated
Stainless Steel manufacturer in South Asia on Thursday signed an agreement with the Orissa government to set up a
super critical Ñ,32 MW thermal power plant in Dhenkanal.

JSL will set up power plant at Luni in Dhenkanal district at an investment of Rs.7,375 crore. The deal was signed at
the state secretariat by Rajdeep Mohanty, chief resident manager of JSL (Orissa project), and energy secretary P.K.
Jena. Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik and Other dignitaries are also present on Thursday.
