“This is the beginning

Develop the of Classroom Classroom Flow =

end.”
National’s Five Keys to Successful Social and Emotional
Learning
 Self-Awareness (thoughts and feelings, conflict mediation, journaling)
 Self-Management (self-control, regulate emotions, counting five or taking a break,
tools to deal with anger)
 Social Awareness (embracing diversity, social justice issues, role playing)
 Relationship Skills (project based learning very important, must know how to work
with others and handle conflict)
 Responsibility (actively engaged in learning)
Four Areas of Learning Theory
 Behavioral Approach
 Reinforces, token economies, and cues
 Cognitive Approach
 Counseling relying on the students ability to reason and id his or her actions in
school
 Humanist Approach
 Facilitate, students manage their own learning environment
 Social Psychological Approach
 Social skills instruction and cooperative learning
Why the Behavioral Approach?
 Defining Learning in Behavioral Terms
 Use of reinforce both social and academic behavior
 Positive reinforce, with token economies, cues and shaping.
 There will be a dash of the Humanistic Approach mainly in the form of
collaboration and task management.
My Approach to Teaching:
“The one concept that seems to work with students time and again is the behavioral
approach. I have seen this in my daily interactions as a substitute. In addition, a
slight Humanist tilt with lots of collaboration has worked time and again in
classrooms from 1st through 6th grades. I believe in safety first, detailed work,
focus, and fun. I teach using the Socratic Method, which is asking a question of the
students. Do you understand my Socratic approach? Again, I want to welcome
your student to class and assure you the process will be professional, polite and
fun. Please you are welcome in class anytime.”

Classroom Factors
 Classroom Rules (throughout school day)
 Safety first, raise hand if you have a question, do not interupt teacher during lecture, golden rule,
do not touch others, restroom breaks are allowed one per day or time docked, everyone will have
a task assigned, teacher is always available if you do not understand the expectations.
 Classroom Transitions (Enter/Exit, Subject Matter, Learning Activity)
 Enter and exit classroom quietly, subject matters will be CCSS, learning activities will involve
use of games and prizes
 Classroom vs. Student supplies
 Student supplies are to be kept in backpack on preassigned hooks, classroom supplies are handed
out by preassigned supply people chosen for each group.
 Strategy for a Safe Learning Environment
 Sit correctly, do not touch others, do not leave classroom without permission, use restroom and
drinking fountain during recess and lunch.
 Informing the Parents
 Parents will be informed of student needs and issues through notebook sent home daily, and
email.
 Students with special needs, IEP’s, and diverse learners.
 RSP students will be allowed interaction with their teacher during classroom time, all IEP’s will
be strictly adhered to, diversity will be encouraged by teaching about different cultural
contributions to arts, science, math, and English.
Classroom Management Part 1
(#2 Student Discipline and Management example)
 “During your social studies class, two students in the back of the room become
engaged in a heated argument that threatens to escalate into a fight. How might you
address this kind of disruption within the classroom? What steps will you take to
address this specific problem and hopefully prevent future incidents?”
 Safety first, physically separate the students. Both go on time out, then get each students
opinion of what happened.
 Then put both students on time out, one to be sent to a different room.
 Use the incident to remind the students the rules in the classroom and first among them is
“never touch others.”
 We would review the classroom five rules of conduct
 Both students would receive a write up and documentation in their file.
 The student who struck first gets a notice to the principal about the incident with
recommendation their parents are called.
 Finally, those two would apologize together for disrupting the class in verbal and written
format.
 Punishment will be no free time the entire day.
“Classroom Management is the beginning not an end in
itself.” Classroom Flow is Key
 It is to set up an orderly and safe space so kids can learn what it is you want them to learn.
 Establish routines
 Know where they sit, that the students are ready to learn, and kids get quite and the
learning
 Whispers discipline
 Non-verbal clues to redirect

 “Game structure and everyone can be a winner, much more participation and easier for kids.”
