“Smart Home Technology Becomes a Must-Have in Senior Living”

Summary: In the article, the author mentions many ways that senior living can become easier
with the help of many new upgrades in technology and new inventions of home technology that
can assist the living possibly cutting the cost of a hired employee to take that place. These new
inventions take the place as new health and medicinal indicators that can make life easier for the
elders. For many of these products, the marketing of these products includes advertisements that
show seniors being helped in several ways. Take “Google Home” for example, where the
advertisement shows a senior connecting more with their family than before. And the industry
for these products are showing positive trends in terms of marketing and product sales and many
of the consumers include seniors or family members of those seniors. New inventions are
replacing older technologies that allow for the big hazards in elderly homes to be upgraded and
changed in a way that they can help put the living conditions of these elderly patients at ease and
hopefully eliminate the chance of needing assisted living. This however can decrease the
business of the assisted living companies and the programs designed for further care for senior
because by implementing technologies that help decrease the chances of potential health and
safety hazards. Technology that is easy for both young and older consumers to use is the primary
goal and mission of these companies when producing products that can help seniors with their
living conditions and costs.
Personal Response: I thought this article was very informing in the sense that it showed some of
the latest trends when talking about senior living. It showed specific examples and I really
enjoyed reading this article. I liked the part of the article where it gave me specific examples
where people were helped. The article didn’t really invoke any emotions but helped me realize
that the cost of living for elderly can sometimes be too hard for most families to keep up with.
Some of my thoughts/questions were that if these new products are using electricity, doesn’t it
raise the electricity bill for those specific seniors and families. I was wondering about this
information when I was reading the part where it talked about the trends and the reduction of the
cost. I would want to know more specific gadgets designed for the senior that can also help them
in other ways. Many of these products are not medically related so I wanted to know how many
are really medically related and can actually help decrease the chances of problems arising in
seniors.
