Website Reviews
1.Website: https://www.disabilityisnatural.com/

General Description: This website talks about how people with disabilities are just like any other
person in this world and how we are more in common with those without a disability than
different. It talks about People First Language, how we use it and the power of language when
communicating.

Who would benefit from this information (early childhood staff, family members,
administrators)?
Early childhood educators, parents of a child with a disability, principal/administration

List 3 interesting things you learned:

1. That People First Language is not political correctness, but rather a way to demonstrate
good manners, respect, the golden rule, etc and can change the way we see a person or
the way a person sees his/herself.
2. I learned new ways to use Person First Language, ie: instead of “He has behavioral
problems” use “He needs behavioral support.” I used to think a defining feature of myself
was my disability and would explain to people that I have a learning disability and I felt
stupid/less because of it. Throughout the years, I learned that I just learn differently and
need different tools/support/accommodations to be as successful as the next person.
3. The power of introducing Assisted Technology (AT) with young children. I wish I was
introduced to AT in my early years because just like it’s described in the article, I too was
pulled out of some of my classes because I was not able to keep up with them but studies
show that, “Assisted Technology can help reduce or eliminate the current 70-75 percent
unemployment rate of adults with developmental disabilities.”

Would you recommend this site? Why or why not?

Yes. I enjoyed this website thoroughly because I have an auditory processing learning disability
and growing up it was diminishing and I felt very vulnerable in the classroom, and this is a
website that I think if my parents had shown to me growing up, I would have felt more like my
peers than I did back then.

2. Website: http://www.parentcenterhub.org/repository/categories/

General Description: This website gives information about the Individuals with Disabilities
Education Act (IDEA). It gives definitions of specific disability terms that are eligible for special
education and related services.

Who would benefit from this information (early childhood staff, family members,
administrators)?

Parents of a child with a disability, early childhood educators

List 3 interesting things you learned:

1. This summer, the U.S. Department of Education issued a rule that prolongs the date for
states to comply with the “Equity in IDEA regulations” by 2 years.
2. It was set to start on July 1, 2018 but is now pushed back to July 1, 2020.
3. They also postponed the date for including children 3-5 “in the analysis of significant
disproportionality, with respect to the identification of children as children with
disabilities and as children with a particular impairment.”

Would you recommend this site? Why or why not?

Yes, I liked this website because it gives a lot of useful information about who is eligible and
goes into detail about each disability that qualifies.

4. Website: https://www.disabilityscoop.com/

developmental disabilities.

Who would benefit from this information (early childhood staff, family members,

List 3 interesting things you learned:

1. One in 4 Americans lives with some type of disability

2. A new study shows that the prenatal Tdap vaccine, that is strongly recommended for
pregnant women, does not influence the odds that their children will develop autism.
3. There was an article that talked about how Facebook faced allegations of allowing
advertisers to discriminate against people with a disability, and the social networker said
it plans to remove over “ 5,000 categories from the options advertisers can select to target
in an effort to ‘prevent misuse.’”

Would you recommend this site? Why or why not?

Yes I thought this website was very informative and I found many articles to be interesting,
especially the Facebook article.

1. Dr. Kluth is a consultant, author, advocate, and independent scholar who works with
teachers and families to provide inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities to
have a more engaging experience in the classroom. I think all early childhood educators
should glance at her website and read her books. I am certainly interested in reading one
of them.

learning disability. I also learned a lot more about learning disabilities then I did before.

1.Website: https://www.spdstar.org/

General Description: This website is called STAR Institute for Sensory Processing Disorder and
it is a treatment, research and education center with any child or adult with SPD. This includes
feeding disorders and other disorders related to a sensory issue such as autism or ADHD.

Who would benefit from this information (early childhood staff, family members,
administrators)?

Children/adult with these conditions, teachers, administration

List 3 interesting things you learned:

1. Sensory processing is the way the nervous system receives messages from the senses and
turns them into a response. The information goes into the brain but does not get organized
2. We have 8 sensory systems rather than 5
3. The cause of SPD has not been detected but is found to be inherited
