ABSTRACT

A universal joint (universal coupling, U-joint, Cardan joint, Spicer or Hardy Spicer joint, or
Hooke's joint) is a joint or coupling connecting rigid rods whose axes are inclined to each
other, and is commonly used in shafts that transmit rotary motion. It consists of a pair of
hinges located close together, oriented at 90° to each other, connected by a cross shaft. The
universal joint is not a constant-velocity joint. The main concept of the universal joint is
based on the design of gimbals, which have been in use since antiquity. One anticipation of
the universal joint was its use by the ancient Greeks on ballistae. In Europe the universal
joint is often called the Cardano joint or Cardan shaft, after the Italian mathematician
Gerolamo Cardano; however, in his writings, he mentioned only gimbal mountings, not
universal joints.

Advantages:

*Drive framework is less inclined to end up stuck.

*The rider can't progress toward becoming dirtied from chain oil or harmed by "Chain
chomp" when dress or a body part gets between an unguarded chain and a sprocket.
*Lower upkeep than a chain framework when the drive shaft is encased in a tube.

Disadvantage:

*A drive shaft framework gauges in excess of a chain framework, generally 0.5– 1 kg (1– 2
lb) heavier.
*A significant number of the favorable circumstances asserted by drive shaft's advocates can
be accomplished on a chain-driven bike, for example, covering the chain and riggings.
*Utilization of lightweight derailleur gears with a high number of proportions is outlandish,
in spite of the fact that center point riggings can be utilized.
*Wheel expulsion can be convoluted in a few plans (as it is for some chain-driven bikes with
center riggings)
INTRODUCTION
A Universal coupling is a special type of coupling in which misalignment of shafts is
allowed. Shafts are free to move any direction in order to transmit torque or power from one
shaft to another. In this project work a Universal coupling was designed, in which safe torque
on shafts and pin size of cross determined.
Applications :
universal coupling is more commonly used in following applications.

Aircrafts

Driveshaft

Control mechanisms

Control mechanisms

Medical and optical devices

Radio

Belt conveyors

Metal forming machinery

Appliances

Centrifugal blowers

Electronic instruments

Sewing machines

Tool drivers

RESULTS:

CONCLUSION

In this project we have designed a shock absorber used in a 150cc bike.we have modeled the
shock absorber by using a solidworks software. The results were obtained are quite favorable
which was expected. This result focus relationship between the manufacturing cost and joint
angle performance measures of an automotive universal joint, results illustrate that an
increase in the drivable joint angle requires a corresponding increase in manufacturing cost.
However, for both the flange and weld yoke, a substantial reduction in manufacturing cost
may be realized by restricting the joint angle to less than 30°. that the manufacturing cost of
the flange and weld yokes may be decreased by 4.5% and 4.0%, respectively, while
simultaneously increasing the joint angle by 34° and 38°.
