A film is much more than entertainment, it’s a piece of art that collects seamlessly 

integrated pieces of raw media together to create a vision of the world. When I first had the 
pleasure of watching Webb’s ​500 Days Of Summer​, I realised this, and it started an 
impetuous interest. The actions of the film’s protagonist inflicted a change in my view of 
cinema; presenting the fact that audience members are usually deeply influenced or 
affected by what they see in films and therefore have unrealistic perceptions on life. The 
infatuation I developed from watching films inspired me to place my adoration for the art 
form and act upon it to produce professional standards of work. 
 
Zhang’s stunningly crafted H ​ ouse of Flying Daggers​ expresses the reasons why I love film: the 
art style in the detailed costumes, soundtrack choices, cinematography, performances and 
overall mise-en-scene within the film interested me enough to search for a deeper meaning 
to why the director used such a diverse range of editing styles and colour pallets. From this, 
I found myself engrossed in the art of filmmaking. I began to observe films from a different 
point of view watching, Anderson, Nolan and del Toro films to improve my knowledge. I 
took it upon myself to get involved with as many super-curricular activities as possible in 
relation to the film industry. This involved picking up an internship at Merge FM where I 
had the unique opportunity to work with DJ, Chris Fisher and develop skills that would be of 
substance to me in the future such as intensive research processes and use of the sound 
equipment. This allowed me to gain experience using the technology as well as what occurs 
behind the scenes of live media production in the auditory field. I voluntarily signed up for 
an extra half GCSE in photography to develop my experience behind the camera as a 
photographer, impacting my photography skills guided by my creative eye which will have a 
positive impact on my future. 
 
The culture and lifestyle that the beautiful city of Muscat has exposed me to has impacted 
my outlook on the world. Studying in Oman has brought me many different unique 
opportunities, such as embarking on a performing arts trip to NYC and Washington D.C. 
where I had the chance to work with talented people in the film and performing arts 
industry. I demonstrated and improved upon my photography, dance, acting and 
filmmaking skills throughout the trip. These skills still remain with me today and I have 
been able to develop the ability to apply these skills to any academic or practical situation. 
These skills in the physical creation of a film that I have acquired over the years are strong 
enough to fall in line with the analytical mindset that I have built upon as an English 
Literature student when it comes to perceiving and writing creatively about theories 
surrounding filmography. I have also greatly improved upon myself as an individual 
throughout my life by voluntarily performing selfless actions that would impact the world 
as well as myself, such as completing the Race For Life twice. My experience ranges from 
academic to domestic as I lived alone in the UK for four months, attending college and 
working part-time in customer service. I believe that this improved my skills as a 
well-rounded individual and changed how I viewed living alone in the UK which would 
benefit me in the future in regards to beginning my three-year university experience. 
Overall, the understanding that I have obtained through these unique opportunities have 
helped to shape who I am today, and the exceptional individual I hope to bring to your 
university. 
 
To earn the career in would be a dream and a colossal honour on my behalf. My 
aspirations collate together to hopefully construct a career in the film industry, if I were to 
earn this career path in film I would be achieving a life-long dream.
