Metropolitan City of Bari and of the Apulia region, on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy. It is the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas. The city has a population of 324.198, it is extended on 116 square kilometres (45 sq mi), while its metropolitan area, composed by 41 municipalities, has 1.3 million inhabitants. Bari has a solid mercantile tradition and has
always represented a focal point in trade relations with the East and the Middle East. The port of Bari is the most important passenger p o r t o f t h e A d r i a t i c s i d e a n d i t s a i r p o r t, “ B a r i Karol Wojtyła” is connected to the main European capitals. The railway connections are also guaranteed by the 18 stations crossed daily by about 300 trains. Over the centuries the city has preserved its a n c i e n t m e r c a n t i l e a n d m a n u f a c t u r i n g v o c a t i o n, becoming the main commercial centre of the Adriatic and Ionian Area. Its industrial area, the second largest on the Adriatic coast (extending over 2000 hectares), is home for important national and international companies in the automotive, mechanical, electronics, and chemical sectors (Magneti Marelli, Bosch, Getrag- Magna, Skf, BHGE - Baker Hughes, General Electric Group). RESEARCH & INDUSTRY A place of development In terms of research and knowledge, the metropolitan city of Bari has 3 universities (of which the only Polytechnic of Southern Italy), the largest musical conservatory in Italy, an important academy of fine arts, 11 institutes of the national research centre (NRC), an international Institute of agronomic research (CIHEAM) and overall has a strong specialization in the fields of biotech, agro-industry, engineering, information technology, constructions, human sciences. St. Nicholas of Myra makes Bari recognizable throughout the Orthodox area (Eastern Europe and Russia) from which thousands of pilgrims come every year to venerate the Saint.
