It was Nationals day. Avery Smith was taking on a very troublesome course. The crowd was
cheering in a way that was electrifying. Professionals had played at this exact golf course and posted
scores as low as 66. Avery’s focus was to visualize that nobody was on that Golf course but him. It had
taken him much hard work and dedication to get to this point in his golfing career. His heart rate had
started to increase rapidly, his hands were sweating, and his body went numb…. He froze… Backed off
the ball, took a few deep breaths, and remembered why he was there in the first place. A few minutes
passed by, then it was time…. He shot, scored a 76, and made 8th place in the whole competition!!
Avery was born in Hickory, NC, and now lives in Shelby, NC. He attended Crest Middle and High
school and played golf all through his school years. Avery’s family members include mother, Joni, dad,
Jerry, big sisters Raven and Shay. He also has an uncle name Golden, and that is the person that
introduced him to golf. Golden taught Avery how to play golf in the 6th grade. “They started out by
playing little courses that they had made at home and made their way to par 3 courses” (Avery). Avery
played recreational golf in his community that summer, and then joined his first school team. His uncle
Although Avery is disciplined and has patience, often at times he can be a daredevil and
rebellious. Smith says one the things he’s done that was rebellious is steal a street sign. But that’s not
the only thing fun about Avery. He also enjoys spending time with his friends and even says that “last
year me and my friends went to the beach and stayed in a different house every night. We stayed up all
night and it was straight full sends”. Full sends mean that you are sort of unbothered; another way to
say YOLO or just plain not giving a ****. Because of this carefree side of Avery, we can see that he lives a
Avery has had to overcome something horrific that most people do not have to endure or go
through. Avery lost all of his grandparents all within a years’ time. Rest in peace to them. Everybody
knows that losing your grandparents is one of our biggest fears and worst heartbreak. From this horrific
experience, Avery has come out to be is a very strong person. Only the strongest of people can heal
Avery is the type of person that loves to loosen up and has a great sense of humor, but also is
the type that can buckle down and get things done. Avery’s life obstacles have made him grow up to be
a person that can overcome anything life throws at him. But he also has not lost his touch of carefree
and wild. Avery’s love for golf has contributed to his upbringing in life. “It teaches discipline and
patience that you don’t only use in sports but in life. It helps make the person I am today”.
