Lesson Idea Name: Place Value

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 1st grade
Content Standard Addressed: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.NBT.B.2

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: The students will first be taught a lesson on place value. The lesson will be focused on
understanding that two digits numbers have an amount of tens and ones. The students will be involved in
the lesson, by participating in discussion, taking notes, and answering questions. After the lesson, the
teacher will provide the students with a formative assessment on Kahoot! to analyze if the students are
comprehending the lesson.
Representation: This lesson will have representation, by providing another way to assess the students. By
the students doing a formative assessment through Kahoot!, it provides another way to present material.
Action and Expression: By using Kahoot! as a formative assessment, students will be able to display what
they have learned from the lesson.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
- The place value lesson will be for one week. After the SRT activity, the teacher will analyze the data
from the Kahoot!, and determine how to alter the lesson for the next day on place value. If the
students are struggling with the learning objective, the teacher will provide counting manipulatives
in the next lesson for the students. This will provide a hands-on activity and visual for the students
to understand how to digits have a specific amount of tens and ones. If the students are all
understanding the lesson, then the teacher will reiterate the lesson the next day, and then focus on
challenging numbers. For example, a student may have a misconception that the number 20 is
twenty ones, rather that two tens.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):

Student Response and Assessment Tools
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT activity the students will be given iPads to answer the questions on the Kahoot!. The
teacher will tell the students that this will be assessing what they have learned so far, and it isn’t for a
grade. The students will be provided with sixty seconds to answer each question. The teacher will read the
question to the students when it is displayed on the screen. The SRT activity will take fifteen minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will display the Kahoot! answers after the SRT activity. I will go over each of the questions, so that the
students have an understanding of why a particular answer is the correct answer. It is important to provide
students with understanding and reiterate concepts.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

- After the SRT activity, I will discuss the correct answers with the students.

How will the data be used?

- The data from this SRT activity will be used for the teacher only. The teacher will be able to analyze
what the students are understanding and having challenges with. The teacher will use the data to
alter the lesson for the next day.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
- My personal goal for this activity is to determine if students perform better on interactive
formative assessments, rather than traditional assessments (quizzes, exit tickets). Also, my
personal goal is to determine if students should be given a formative assessment in the middle of
the week or the beginning of week.

Reflective Practice:
- I feel that this lesson can impact the learning of students, by helping them understand a standard
and engage in practicing the standard. To further extend this lesson, I could use videos, and other
SRT activities during the week of the lesson, to enhance their learning.
