1. INTRODUCTION

Slide bearings
+ good damping factor
+ less sensitive to dirt than other
bearings
+ high speed range possible
+ highest load factor possible
+ low noise and low friction losses
+ less sensitive to vibrations
+ unlimited lifetime
+ clearance adjustable
+ easy dismantling
+ cheep and easy manufacturing of
bearing

- continuos oil consumption necessary

- high break away torque
- lifting oil required for heavy rotors at
low speed

2. BEARING TYPES

Two lobe bearing

 One of a common bearing is the lemon type

journal bearing.
 two bearing halves,
 special tapered bolts
 Lubrication from both sides in the horizontal
plane.
 oil scraper on both sides of the bearing
prevents the lubricating oil from leaking out
along the shaft.
 four key plates for adjusting the bearing

The adjusting plates are designed with a slight

radius in the axial direction for self alignment of
the bearing in relation to the shaft.

3. OPERATING MODE

The slide bearing needs an oil film between shaft and the surface of the bearing

Babbitt Alloy
of tin, antimony
and copper)

Highest oil pressure

 If the shaft is rotating at a certain speed an oil wedge pushes the shaft to the top.
 During standstill or if the compressor is running under low speed, only the pressure
the oil pump or the jacking oil pump performs lifts the shaft
 The oil wedge also changes the position of the rotor, depending on the direction of
rotation and the thickness of the oil wedge

3. OPERATING MODE

Special Bearing Design - Jacking oil

To reduce the breakaway torque (determined by the driver) for heavy

compressor rotors, lemon- type and tilting-pad bearings are equipped with
high-pressure oil connections for lifting the shaft at startup and shutdown

4. TEMPERATURE CONTROL

Radial bearing Axial bearing

Alarm temperature approximately 55° - 80°C

Shutdown temperature approximately 80° - 110°C
Babbit melting point approximately 330° - 380°C
DEPENDS ON THE PROCESS AND BABBIT USED

Due to the updated monitoring requirements, the safety standards and the
desired reliability, the bearings are equipped with thermocouples wherever
necessary.
