EE538: Photonics Fundamentals

Fall 2016

Course Catalog Description

The term photon-ics is an optical analogue of electron-ics i.e., instead of electrons, photons are running in engineering
systems. The last decade has seen tremendous progress in photonics systems in various fields including
telecommunications, consumer electronics, sensing, security, agriculture, and health care. Realizing the potential of
photonics, United Nations declared 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015). Since
globally there is a strong emphasis on research and development towards photonics systems for myriad of applications
therefore, this course will prepare our students for pursuing this important area.
The course will cover core concepts of photonics including geometrical optics, polarization, interference, diffraction,
Gaussian beams and laser sources. Each covered concept will be augmented with discussions on industrial and research
applications.
