INTRODUCTION

Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management also known as BSHRM is

geared towards equipping students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to provide

quality service in the hospitality industry. It contains subjects that will address the needs of

different sectors in the hospitality industry such as culinary, front office, tourism, and resort and

hotel operators.

Central Luzon State University is one of universities offering BSHRM. CLSU-BSHRM

is concerned on the development of practical and management skills which are achieved through

the combination of theoretical classes, exercises and experimental learning. Graduates of this

course will possess business management and accounting skills to be able to compute daily sales,

recipe costing, cost control and inventory management.

Hospitality education should focus not only on the development of professional

competences – professional knowledge, professional skills and reflection but also on the

development of cognitive competence, ability to solve problems as well as social competences

such as self-competence, co-operation and communication. Everyone is aware of the direct

impact of mathematics, which serves as a tool for solving and calculating various problems.

However, much greater is indirect impact of mathematics providing such learning outcomes as

the skills in accounting, business math, costing, finance, statistics, rooms division management

and control system, food and beverage control system and quantity food production.

Business Mathematics (MATH103) Mathematics is an important part of managing

business. Business and mathematics go hand in hand this is because business deals with money

and money encompasses everything in itself. There is a need for everyone to manage money as

some point or the other to take decisions which requires everyone to know mathematics.
Business mathematics is used by commercial enterprises to record and manage business

operations. Commercial organizations use mathematics in accounting, inventory management,

marketing, sales forecasting, and financial analysis. It helps you know the financial formulas,

fractions; measurements involved in interest calculation, hire rates, salary calculation, tax

calculation etc. which help complete business tasks efficiently. Business mathematics also

includes statistics and provides solution to business problems.

Finance (FIN100) Demand, occupancy and expenses must all be included in the pricing

model. When room rates are adjusted to optimize both occupancy and revenue, the financial

manager is practicing yield management.

Food and Beverage Control System (HRM340) can help you introduce the same financial

rigor to your dining establishment or catering company that you’ll find in manufacturing

operation.

Hotel and Restaurant Accounting (HRM115) it is mainly used for cost center reporting,

center profitability, product profitability, and customer target profitability. Then also for control

of costs, monitoring, planning and decision making especially beverages, administration and

booking. Sometimes it involves high risks of spoiled food and other damaged goods; it requires

careful analysis of the orders and booking by the customers in the hotel industry.

Statistics (STAT200) Statistics is relevant to everything. It is important to be able to

understand and evaluate data when you come across it. It makes you a smarter consumer, worker,

and manager for the future.

Rooms Division Management and Control System (HRM300) the subject aims to give

you an insight into the everyday tasks performed by a Front Office Manager and the Executive

Housekeeper. It also aims to assess your ability to think as a manager in Rooms Division, with
regard to financial and service related matters. The overall aim is to ensure that you have a sound

knowledge of the responsibilities of running a Rooms Division department.

Quantity Food Production (HRM220)The fundamentals of food preparation, and

application of these principles to quantity food production in commercial and non-commercial

settings. Emphasis is placed on the use of quantity food preparation equipment, menu planning,

and production.

In college courses, where students are required to take mathematics subjects, the students

may experience failure in the subjects if did not perform well. This challenge which mathematics

offers, gives the students ability to be more logical and analytical in solving not only in

mathematical problems, but can be also applied in real-life situations. If it will be fully

understood and utilized, then it may create a better perspective for students taking up

mathematical courses to use their problem-solving abilities wisely and at their fullest potential

towards flexibility.

Statement of the Problem

There are many students extract effort in taking Math-related subjects. It is now a part of

each life, especially to those students studying on it. There are so many reasons for the failure of

students especially subjects like mathematics. Parents and society is responsible for this reason

but our educational system and unsystematic is fully responsible for this problem.

The Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management students are now facing a

big problem of being failed in different math subjects in HRM level.

How does CLSU BSHRM across all levels perform in their math-related subjects during

the first semester school year 2017-2018?

Sub

How do first year BSHRM Students perform in Business Math and Hotel and Restaurant

Accounting?

How do second year BSHRM Students perform in Statistics, Finance, Banquet and Catering

Management, and Quantity Food Production?

How do third year BSHRM Students perform in Rooms Division Management and Food and

Beverage Control System?

Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to determine performance of students in their math-related subjects in

Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management, Central Luzon State University.

Specifically, the study will be conducted to:

Describe the socio-demographic characteristics of the BSHRM students.

Determine the causes of difficulties in math-related subjects.

Identify the coping mechanisms of BSHRM students in dealing math-related subjects.

Significance of the Study

The study on the performance of CLSU BSHRM students in their math-related subject will

help teachers to use this study as a reference of what techniques will they use to help the students

to improve their math-related subjects.

This study will show the problem of student performance in their math-related subject and

what techniques can help them to understand math-related subject easier. This research will help

to develop every students who are having difficulties in math-related subject.
