JOURNAL 1

Throughout many years, we have been taught that learning occurs inside the

classroom where a teacher teaches us the different lessons and where we gain

knowledge and information about everything. As the years pass by, it has been proven

that learning does not only exist within the four walls of our classroom but even on the

outside world through experiences. It is the same with learning science. It is not just

learning the branches of science like chemistry, biology, physics, so on and so forth but

it is more of learning the methods we use to learn.

Everyday in our life we encounter problems. When we encounter problems, we

tend to seek solutions for it. In our class, one of the concepts that I find easy to understand

is about the scientific method. According to our handout, I have learned that there are 5

steps in the scientific method which includes: Observation, Questioning, Prediction,

Testing prediction and Drawing conclusion. If I am going to apply it in real life like for

instance, every morning I eat bread for breakfast. Supposed that I put 2 slices of bread

into the toaster. However, I observed that the toaster did not work. So I am going to ask

myself a question of why the toaster is not working and I will start formulating the

hypothesis of the possible explanations for it. Like, the toaster is broken itself or the

electrical outlet is broken. After that, I will make predictions like if I plug the toaster into a

different outlet then it will be fixed. To know if my hypothesis is right and if my prediction

will work, after that, I will test my prediction. I will try to plug the toaster into different outlet

and see if it will toast. However if it's not the outlet, then the problem is the toaster itself.

I will buy a new toaster and replace the old one.

Through the scientific method, I was able to solve a usual problem that people

encounter in real life. I was able to seek for reasonable and accurate solutions. Using the

scientific method, we are able to precisely study the information that our brain receives

like the structure and nature of things. Another concept that I find easy to understand is

about weight which is defined according to our handout as, the force upon an object due

to gravity. Then the force which is defined as a push or pull with units of Newtons. I have

learned that the weight of objects can change based on its location. So if I weigh 100

pounds, in the outer space I will be weightless. Another is about force which is involved

in our everyday movements. Just by simply pushing a grocery cart at the supermarket

and pulling a door for it to close, force is applied.

One of the concepts that I find hard to understand involves mathematical

computation which is about acceleration. Based on our handout, it is a variation in motion.

I find it difficult to understand because I am confused with the formula, on how to solve

the answers with correct order of mathematical operations that I am going to use.
