Properties 0f Number Homework

Today, you learned about different types of numbers. These categories of number are called
sets. You learned about six sets of numbers: natural numbers, prime numbers, whole numbers, integers,
rational numbers, and real numbers (rational and irrational numbers).

Please answer the following questions:

1. Give 3 examples of a natural number:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

2. Give 3 examples of a prime number:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

3. Give 3 examples of a whole number:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

4. Give 3 examples of an integer:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

5. Give 3 examples of a rational number:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

6. Give 3 examples of a real number:

a.___________b.__________c.___________

7. Please give me an example of the commutative property:___________________________

8. Please give me an example of the associative property:____________________________

9. Please give me an example of an identity:______________________________________

10.Please describe as best you can what an irrational number is:

11.Now, the sets of numbers contain each other. Think about cars. Toyotas are types of cars, so
“Toyotas” are contained in a set of objects called “cars”. The Toyota model “Prius” is a type of
car contained in the set “Toyota”, and because the set “Toyota” is in the set of objects called
“cars”, the Prius is also in the set called “cars”. (This logical property is called transitivity).
DeLacy-sensei’s car Nero is a Toyota Prius, so it is in the set “Prius”, it is also in the set “Toyota”
and in the set “car”. Does this make sense? But not all cars are DeLacy-sensei’s Prius, and not all
cars are “Toyotas”. So the set “Toyota” is in the set “car”, but the set “car” is not in the set
“Toyota”. Can you think of your own example of sets within sets?

12.There’s a really convenient way to illustrate this idea. It’s called a Venn diagram. I’ll show you a
Venn diagram for my cars example:

You can see that “Toyota” is part of

“Cars”, but there are other things
besides “Toyota” in “cars”. There’s
“Honda” and a subset of Honda is the
“accord”. So not all cars are Toyotas,
some are Hondas or Fords etc. But
all Toyotas are cars.

13. Please make a Venn diagram illustrating the sets you came up with in Problem 11.

14. Now, think back on the sets of numbers: natural numbers, prime numbers, whole numbers,
integers, rational numbers, and real numbers (rational and irrational numbers). Can you fill in the
below Venn diagram correctly with the names of the six sets of numbers?
15.Now, take your examples from the first page and put them in the smallest set they belong in on
your venn diagram. For example: 6 is a real number, a rational number, an integer, a whole number
and a natural number, but natural numbers are the smallest of these sets, so put 6 in the box
where you wrote: “natural numbers”
