Using Inferential Reading Skills and Utilizing Primary Sources
Learning Intention: Compare the economic development of the North and the South
Success Criteria: I can describe the similarities and differences of the Northern and Southern
economies and explain how that impacts the Civil War
Rationale: Unit 3 is about westward expansion and the march toward the Civil War. We talked
about the nullification crisis in our notes and now we are analyzing primary sources that help us
go deeper into the situation when South Carolina was threatening to nullify a new tariff.
Materials: School provided Chromebooks, whiteboard, markers, projector, NearPod
Differentiation: Students can see better since they each have their own Chromebook. They also
can zoom in. I have uploaded the documents into NearPod, where they can zoom in. It is also
student paced so my advanced students do not have to wait for others and the lower students do
not have to worry about keeping up with more advanced students.
Activities:
Instructor:
● First I will assign them their Chromebooks and allow them time to log in and get to
NearPod. The code for their session will be up on the Projector.
● I will then have them take out a separate piece of paper and a writing utensil. The last
time we answered questions on NearPod the answers were not always saved so they will
be writing them on a separate piece of paper
● Then we will go over the first question together. We will read the document together and
then I will let them read it on their own. Then we will answer the first set of questions
together.
● After we work together as a class to answer the questions I will send them off to work
through the rest of the documents and answer the questions individually for the remainder
of the period.
Students:
● Follow along through the example. Then complete the activity in class by reading the
documents and answering the questions.
Evaluation/Assessment: The lesson will be successful if the students participate in the activity
and complete all of the questions by the end of the period. I will go over their answers to assess
their understanding. I will also grade their work and give them points based on completion and
correctness of the activity.
Closing Activity: Give the students time to log off their Chromebooks and plug them in and
clean up the rest of their stuff.
