E-GARBAGE MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING SYSTEAM

ABSTRACT
In the present scenario, we see the garbage bins being overloaded and all the garbage spills out
resulting in pollution. The detection, monitoring and management of waste is one of the primary
problems of the present era. The traditional way of monitoring the wastes in waste bins is complex,
cumbersome process which takes more human effort, time and cost which is not compatible with the
present day technologies in any way. Hence our problem statement is to design a system based on
microcontroller using Arduino methodology for collecting garbage from particular area whose
garbage bins are overflowing with prior concern. This method is advanced
in which garbage management is automated. This project Garbage Monitoring system using IOT is
a very innovative system which will help to keep the cities clean. This system makes use of
microcontroller, LCD screen, Arduino methodology for sending data. Ultra sonic sensors are used to
detect the level of garbage collected in the bins. The LCD screen is used to display the level of
garbage collected in the bins.

1. INTRODUCTION

In the present scenario, we see the garbage bins being overloaded and all the garbage spills
out resulting in pollution. The detection ,monitoring and management of waste is one of the primary
problems of the present era. The traditional way of monitoring the wastes in waste bins is complex,
cumbersome process which takes more human effort, time and cost which is not compatable with
the present day technologies in any way. Hence our problem statement is to design a system based
on microcontroller using zigbee methodology for collecting garbage from particular area whose
garbage bins are overflowing with prior concern. This method is advanced
in which garbage management is automated. This project Garbage Monitoring system using IOT is
a very innovative system which will help to keep the cities clean. This system makes use of
microcontroller, LCD screen, zigbee methodology for sending data. Ultra sonic sensors are used to
detect the level of garbage collected in the bins. The LCD screen is used to display the level of
garbage collected in the bins.
Management of Municipal Solid Waste for various cities and towns has been widely
studied throughout the world. As the huge quantities of solid waste generated in the urban areas is
the major problem, majority of researchers concentrated on this issue. Numbers of researchers have
tried to find out new techniques for solid waste management. Mahar et.al., 2007[1] reported the
review and analysis of solid waste management situation in urban areas of Pakistan. According to
him poor solid waste management is one of the major causes for environmental degradation in
Pakistan. According to Rajput et.al., 2009[2], municipal firm squander production displayed
divergent fashion and a beneficial parallel with monetary development in expression of
kg/capita/day firm waste production at humanity weighing machine.

Pune city's current waste collection considered here as a case work, logistics is carried out by
emptying containers according to predefined schedules and routes which are repeated at a
predefined frequency. Such a System has major disadvantages:

Time consuming, High costs, Greater traffic and congestion, Unnecessary fuel consumption,
Increased noise and air pollution as a result of more trucks on the road.

BVCOE KOLHAPUR Page 5

E-GARBAGE MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING SYSTEAM

All the above disadvantages are a result of lack of real time information resulting in unsuccessful
collection of waste. The Pune Municipal itself finds this as a big problem and a big hurdle in
between Pune’s Smart City initiative. There is an urgent need to optimize the management of this
service to reduce infrastructure, its operating and maintenance costs, as well as reducing
contamination directly associated with waste collection.

life of people many times without that they will realize; with a subtle aid, whether saving vehicle fuel, Day to
day, information technology and communication (ICT) companies are innovating in issues that are very far
from the daily routine of a citizen of a foot fails to see this progress in improvements in their daily well-being
or their way of life translated into progress. But these technologies continue to contribute to the daily
improving the quality of the air in the cities or to facilitate the accessibility to various places in the city.

Fig.2.1 latest garbage collection system

Most are projects and research that try to use, build, and integrate new sources of renewable energy
sources, however in the short term the most profitable solutions, which also will continue to serve in
the future, will be the saving techniques to avoid the current waste of our resources.

And within the framework of these improvements, where the present project, which has a double
objective social and environmental. On the one hand it seeks to improve the quality of life of all
persons living in the cities and encountered problems when driving in the presence of trucks of

BVCOE KOLHAPUR Page 8

E-GARBAGE MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING SYSTEAM

garbage and noise pollution they cause during the night. On the other hand it aims to improve the
efficiency of the system of collection, coming only when necessary, and through optimized routes to
avoid the waste of time and fuel. To reach this goal and in order to achieve this improvement, this
project is marked very clear objectives to reduce the time that these trucks are in the public roads
getting greater efficiency of the time these vehicles operate and thereby reducing pollution that these
trucks released to the environment and noise that contribute to the cities. Its objective, therefore, is
to design a platform for efficient management of the system of garbage collection to enable the
collection of the different parts of the cities need to report and design increasingly efficient and
optimal routes linking the collection points and to change dynamically according to the needs of
every day, and thereby optimize the use of trucks and resources and the savings involved.

In addition, e-Garbage aims to design an innovative system to improve the benefits of these
recycling containers and in turn improve the current forms of this recyclable garbage collection.

In particular, the specific objectives of the project are:

 Analyze and develop a system to detect and generate alarms to the need to waste collection
point.
 Analyze and develop a tracking system that allows to show more efficient optimal routes
given a series of staging points which in turn are geo-referenced and located at all times.

Integrate both systems into a single platform that allows to move the location of the collection
points to system a of energy-efficient and optimized calculation of routes that will be dynamically
configured according to the needs of the moment.

The project e-Garbage is part of the improvements undertaken by the public authorities to promote
recycling within the cities. These measures seek to promote sustainable development and a
reduction of the pollution which is currently released to the atmosphere. This project needs the
participation citizen so that you get what is marked in the long term and this will remain permeable
to all possible suggestions of end users, to make the project closer and easier to use and assimilated
by the citizens.

3.1 Proposed Work

GSM devices can transmit data over long distances by passing data through a mesh network of
intermediate devices to reach more distant ones. GSM is typically used in low data rate applications
that require long battery life and secure networking. GSM has a defined rate of 250 kbit/s, best
suited for intermittent data transmissions from a sensor or input device. GSM device are used to
transmit data over long distance. GSM devices are mainly utilized in mesh network form to transmit
data sequence over a longer distances and transmitting data through intermediate devices to reach
more distant ones. GSM networks are used to form ad-hoc, with no centralized control or high
power transmission or receiver able to reach all of the devices. The GSM module is serial interfaced
with the PC. The microcontroller compares the set limit with input data ,if anyone or both input data
crossed threshold level. Then International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics Special Issue

6.BUZZER
The piezo buzzer produces sound based on reverse of the piezoelectric effect. The generation of
pressure variation or strain by the application of electric potential across a piezoelectric material is
the underlying principle. These buzzers can be used alert a user of an event corresponding to a
switching action, counter signal or sensor input. They are also used in alarm circuits.
The buzzer produces a same noisy sound irrespective of the voltage variation applied to it. It
consists of piezo crystals between two conductors. When a potential is applied across these crystals,
they push on one conductor and pull on the other. This, push and pull action, results in a sound
wave. Most buzzers produce sound in the range of 2 to 4 kHz.
The Red lead is connected to the Input and the Black lead is connected to Ground.

7.GARBAGE CONTAINER

A waste container is a container for temporarily storing waste, and is usually made out of metal or
plastic. The curbside dustbins usually consist of three types: trash cans (receptacles made of metal
or plastic), dumpsters (large receptacles similar toskips) and wheelie bins (light, usually plastic bins
that are mobile). All of these are emptied by collectors, who will load the contents into a garbage
truck and drive it to a landfill, incinerator or consuming crush facility to be
disposed of.

4.1 INTRODUCTION
The miniaturazition in electronic equipment design has introduced new technique known as
“Printed Circuit Board".PCBs and electronics circuit mounted on a base material it is piece of
insulating material usually backlight provide with holes , to accommodate various electronics
equipment

Usually PCB is a circuit made of thin copper foil. Due to thin copper foil PCB need a base to
support .The base is a mounting device which used to fasten the complete package . instead of
cooper some time the conducting material like aluminium, silver , Ni are used. The name printed
circuit arise because the electronic circuit appears to be printed on the base material.

Interconnection between component is achieved by means of conducting path running on

through the substrate called tracks. In PCB, interaction between component is made through
copper tracks instead of using no of wires carrying electric current. As the connection as made
automatic through copper tracks, there is no chance of loss connection or short circuit.

As the connection are made automatically through copper tracks, there is no chance of loss
connection or short circuit.in single sided PCB, copper is coated on one side of board.so the
component are mounted on only one side of the board.

4.3 PCB ETCHING

Chemical etching. Chemical etching is usually done with ammonium persulfate or ferric chloride.
For PTH (plated-through holes), additional steps of electroless deposition are done after the holes
are drilled, then copper is electroplated to build up the thickness, the boards are screened, and
plated with tin/lead

Fig 4.2 PCB ETCHING

4.4 PCB DRILLING

High speed drilling ensures clean hole walls to provide a secure base for good plating on the hole
walls.Drilling is a slow process as each hole must be drilled individually. So depending on
the drill size we drill a stack of one to three PCB panels together. We candrill holes down to 100
microns in diameter.

4.5 MOUNTING

Fig 4.4 MOUNTING

Clearful mounting of component on PCB increases the reliability of assembly . monting is

done apposite to the conducting track.

Soldering is process in which two or more metal items are joint together by melting and flowing a
filter into a joint. soldering is accomplished by heating the metal parts to be jointed and then
applying the flux and a solder to the mating surface .heat is supplied with the soldering iron .

BVCOE KOLHAPUR Page 27

E-GARBAGE MANAGEMENT AND MONITORING SYSTEAM

PACKEGING
PCBs intended for extreme environments often have a conformal coating ,which ios applied by the
dipping or spraying after the component have been soldered. The coat prevent corrosion and leakage
current or shorting due to the conditions. The earliest conformal coat were wax ;modern conformal
coats are usually deeps of dilute solution of silicon rubber, polyurethane, acrylic ,or epoxy. Another
technique for applying a conformal coating is for plastic to be sputtered. onto the pcb in vacuum
chamber . the chief disadvantage of conformal coating is that servicing of the bolt rendered
extremely difficult.

Many assembled PCBs are static sensitive , there must be a placed in antistatic backs during
transport . when handling these board , the user must be grounded(earthed). In proper handling
techniques might transmit and accumulated static charge through the board, damaging or
destroying the components. Even bare boards are some time static sensitive. Trace have becomes so
fine that it’s. quite possible to bellow and earth off the board(or change its characteristics) with a
static charge. This is espacially true on non-traditional pcbs such as MCMs and microwave PCBs.
