PHYA 5340 – Clinical Medicine II

Specific Objectives

Following the required reading and lecture, the student should be able to
understand and be able to compare/contrast the following topics.

Esophageal & Stomach Disorders


 Define: Dyspepsia, dysphagia, heartburn, odynophagia, GERD, NERD, Barrett’s
esophagus, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Mallory-Weiss tear, peptic stricture,
infectious esophagitis, achalasia, Zenker’s diverticulum, hiatal hernia, peptic
ulcer, peptic erosion, stress ulcer, intractability, gastritis, gastric outlet obstruction
 Identify lifestyle modifications for GERD
 Differentiate between GERD vs. Peptic Ulcer Disease based on the following:
o Most common etiologies
o Epidemiology
o Classic clinical manifestations
o Complications
o Diagnostic results
o Treatment (you will need to know the most common antibiotics for PUD,
otherwise just main drug classes for PUD and GERD)
o Prognosis
 Identify the differential diagnosis for peptic ulcer disease
 Identify epidemiology, treatment, prognosis and follow-up recommendations for
patients diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus and esophageal dysplasia
 Recognize the patient population that typically presents with infectious
esophagitis
 Recognize the main complications associated with peptic ulcer disease
 Identify alarm or red flag symptoms in patients complaining of abdominal pain /
heartburn
 Differentiate between esophageal varices vs. Mallory-Weiss tear based on:
o Epidemiology
o Etiology
o Clinical manifestations
o Diagnostic testing
o Treatment
o Prognosis
 Recognize the following regarding pyloric stenosis:
o Epidemiology
o Etiology
o Clinical manifestations
o Diagnostic testing
o Treatment
 Recognize the risks involved with developing stomach and esophageal cancers
