Exposure Assignment 1
In this Exposure Assignment you will be taking 3 photos of the same subject, outdoors on
a bright day, with 3 different sets of camera settings, so that you get more comfortable
with how to control and change your camera's exposure.
Requirements: T ake a photo of an object, outside during the day, in sunlight. (Not in
shade).
SCENARIO 1: OVEREXPOSING AN IMAGE
Steps:
1. Find a sunny location
2. Turn your camera on
3. Put your camera into manual mode (M)
4. Set your shutter speed to 1/100
5. Set your F stop (aperture) to f/4.5 either on your lens, or in camera (depending on
your lens and camera)
6. Set your ISO to 200
7. Take a photo toward a bright and sunny area and review the result to see how
those setting impacted your image
Review:
With these settings your photo is likely overexposed (like the photo below). The photo will
look ‘blown out’ with details lost.
Shutter Speed: 1/100, f/4.5, ISO: 200
SCENARIO 2: UNDEREXPOSING AN IMAGE
Steps:
1. Turn your camera on
2. Put your camera into manual mode (M)
3. Set your shutter speed to 1/250
4. Set your F stop (aperture) to f/20
5. Set your ISO to 200
6. Take a photo toward a bright and sunny area and review the result to see how
those setting impacted your image
Review:
With these settings your photo is likely underexposed (Like the photo below). The photo
will look too dark.
Shutter Speed: 1/250, f/20, ISO: 200
SCENARIO 3: PROPERLY EXPOSING AN IMAGE
Steps:
1. Turn your camera on
2. Put your camera into manual mode (M)
3. Set your shutter speed to 1/200
4. Set your F stop (aperture) f/10
5. Set your ISO to 200
6. Take a photo toward a bright and sunny area and review the result to see how
those setting impacted your image
Review:
With these settings your photo is likely exposed correctly (like the photo below).
The photo will have a lot of detail and will maintain the colors, darks and highlights of the
image much better compared to the over and underexposed images.
Shutter Speed: 1/200, f/10, ISO: 200
Please note:
A correctly exposed image is subjective. Slightly under or slightly over exposing may
produce a desired style in an image. For example, modern wedding photos tend to be
slightly overexposed.
