CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

Some of the people in world had this habit of sending a message attempting to

convince the recipient to believe the content of the letter and when the recipient was

convinced by the message, he/she will send it on certain people. This can be the start of

what we called chain mail. According to OED (Oxford English Dictionary), a letter where

in it was written that requires the recipients to pass it on another recipient then process

repeats in a continuous chain, it is called a chain mail. Chain letters usually send it via

mail. But nowadays, chain letter can now send it into many ways such as email, text

messages. Facebook can be one of the most powerful social media sites in this

generation. We can share what’s on our mind. Share everything we want that includes

the chain mail. We have this power to send anything to anyone. But these chain mails

cannot be trusted anymore now that it is just like a normal message tend to manipulate

our mind to believe that if we will not pass it to others, there’s something bad that were

going to happen in our life within 10 minutes. There’s this bad luck that will happen if you

break the chain message. This problem will have more impact to the teenagers.

Teenagers have this kind of personality believe into something immediately that were lack

of information so if they saw or read a chain message they will do it without even thinking

if it is valid or not. This will affect the social and psychological behavior of a teenager now

that there are on the adolescent stage. Everything they do will have an impact on how

they live with their own perspective.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the social and psychological impact of chain mails

among ICT students at MQCQC.

Specifically, it will answer the following questions:

1. What is demographic profile of the respondents as to:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Frequency use of social media

2. What is the social and psychological impact of Chain Mails among ICT students in

terms of:

2.1 Social

2.2 Psychological

3. Is there a significant difference on the responses of students when it comes to

social and psychological impact of chain mails between male and female?

𝐻𝑜 : There is no difference between male and female on the responses when it comes to

social and psychological impact of chain mails.

𝐻𝑎 : There is a difference between male and female on the responses when it comes to

social and psychological impact of chain mails.

Scope and Delimitation

The one that will have the benefits of this study is the ICT Senior High School

Students of MQCQC who experienced receiving chain mails and being distract and this

study also includes practical observations and thoughts of the students who hasn't

experience it. This research sample size has 50 respondents.

Significance of the Study

Researchers believe that through conducting this study people will be more aware

on what could be the social and psychological impact of chain mails. This study will greatly

help the following:

To the Students

This research will help the teenagers to understand what are the social and

psychological impact of chain mail in their everyday life as students.

To the Teachers

This study will help the teacher to know more about the behavior of a student when

it comes in socializing and their psychological behavior inside the school.

To the Society

Not just the students and teachers will have the benefit to this study but also the

community or the society. They can have an awareness on this kind of problem that

surrounds them.
Review of Related Literature

According to Rosie Taylor (2016), chain mails requires a lot of concentration and

patience to make because you have to put it some sense of reality and longing that would

convince the reader and pass it through people who create chain mails has a lot of

patience and time to do such work.

Teen Ink, a blog site says that many children got traumatized deeply from

obnoxious chain letters. Many articles have been written about the effect of scary chain

letters on children but readers just ignore this effect and continue sending these

horrendous messages. They were all terrified and pressured into sending a horrific chain

letter. There are many different chain letters with many different lies but they are all cruel

for children one way or another. (2014)

D'Costa (2016), stated that chain Letters hit the right chord of shock, or trigger the

right degree of anxiety, which prompts the reader to share the stories or information they

contain. To this end, chain letters are actually really suited to social media because the

title effort on the part of the reader is required to pass them on. The transparency offered

by liking and sharing adds a degree of authenticity that is necessary to their survival.

BullGuard an antivirus blog site stated that chain letters are messages sent to a

huge number of people, asking each recipient to forward them to as many other people

as they can. While some of them can be amusing or sent for fun by the original sender,

others may carry hidden threats to your internet security - viruses, phishing attempts etc.

In any case, the letters are so well written than they actually look authentic and convince

you to take the action suggested. Without antivirus protection you can only imagine what

can happen to your computer and personal data. (2018)

Review of Related Study

Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed Chain mail method can not

only accommodate isotropic, anisotropic and heterogeneous materials but also model

incompressibility and relaxation behaviors of soft issues. Further, the proposed method

can achieve real-time computational performance. (Zhang et.al, 2016)

We used to have older letters that purpose of it was to hoax. Misinform and gather

momentum. But now, we live full of impending death, computer viruses, money laundering

schemes. Chain letters exist with a convincing and unjustifiable message (Hayward,

2015).

According to Freeman (2006), most of the internet users have their complaints

about the unrequested messages sent on their email also known as spam. People who

use internet everyday are not aware with this kind of email. In this world full of sending

spam messages, we have to use our commonsense when saw this kind of email.
Conceptual Framework of study

Every research has a theoretical framework that indicate the input, process and

the output.

ICT students in MQCQC.

Definition of Terms:

Chain mail

is a message that attempts to convince the recipient to make a number of

copies of the letter and then pass them on to a certain number of recipients

(either a predefined number or as many as possible).

Facebook

is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to

create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch

with friends, family and colleagues.

Impact

have a strong effect on someone or something.

Information

facts provided or learned about something or someone.

Message

a verbal, written, or recorded communication sent to or left for a recipient

who cannot be contacted directly.

Psychological

of, affecting, or arising in the mind; related to the mental and emotional state

of a person.

Social

relating to society or its organization.

Social Media

websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or

to participate in social networking.

CHAPTER 2

METHODOLOGY

This chapter includes the related literature and studies that are relevant to the

study in the social and psychological impact of chain mails to the selected ICT students

in MQCQC.

Method of Research

The researchers will use the Indirect method in evaluating data for the problem.

This method becomes the simplest way not just only for the researchers but also the

respondents of this research for them to understand easily.

The Indirect Method is a Questionnaire method that have a component of: the

demographic profile of the particular respondents, and the list of questions that are related

to the problem that will also give the researchers an information in conducting the

research.

Sampling

Purposive Sampling is used under the Non-Probability sampling. The researchers

used this sampling for all the students who took the ICT strand in Mary the Queen College

of Quezon city is suitable for the researchers’ questions.

Data Gathering

Researchers gathered data by creating a questionnaire among ICT students in

MQCQC. Questionnaire was known for a specific set of questions created to gathered to

measure specific construct in a consistence way. Questionnaire was selected so that it

can easily know the result of the data that collected using the tally.
Research Instrument

Through careful survey, the researchers used a questionnaire with a specific

question to collect data and thoughts/ideas about Social and Psychological Impact of

Chain Mails among ICT students at MQCQC.

Validity of the Instrument

To validate the instruments that will prepare by the researchers, the questionnaire

will submit to the adviser for some corrections and suggestions to the research. The

students who will not be included as the final respondents will be asked to answer the

questionnaires. Their responses will be tested for reliability. Apart from the content,

validation the questionnaires were given to the researchers’ leader. The researchers will

conduct information among ICT students to test and validate instruments for the topic.

Statistical Treatment of Data

This statistical tool will use by the researchers to compute what the researchers have

gathered from the respondents.

1. Percentage

a percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is

often denoted using the percent sign, "%"

𝑁
𝑷= 𝑥 100
𝑇

Where P= Percentage

N = Total number of respondents

Weighted Mean

This weighted average or the weighted mean will used in descriptive statistical

analysis by the researchers.

Σwx
Weighted mean =

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

In this chapter, researchers include the summary of the result of the previous

chapter, the conclusions that can be seen in the data gathering and collection of the data

and lastly, the recommendations about the study.

Summary of findings:

After the data and information gathered, here’s the summary of CHAPTER 4

1. Twenty-six (26) of the respondents are males or 52 percent, while twenty-four (24) of

the respondents are female with the percentage of 48.

2. 42 of the respondents are from the age of 17-18 years old; 5 are from the age of 19-20

years old; 2 are from the age of 15-16 years old; and 1 are from the age of 21 years old

and above.

3. 20 of the respondents or 40 percent used social media for 4hrs & 30mins and above;

15 or 30 percent used social media for 2hrs & 30mins-3hrs; 10 or 20 percent used social

media for 30mins-1hr; 3 or 6 percent used social media for 1hr&30mins-2hrs; 2 or 4

percent of the respondents used social media for 3hrs&30mins-4hrs.

4. On social impact of chain mail, the respondents were satisfied on "I want my friends to

know I believe their ideas" which ranked first. "I feel happy since my Facebook friends

always tag me" "I want my friends to know I am a good follower", " I want that my friends

will feel that I favor their request are social impact that came second, third and fourth

respectively."
5. Males and females have no significant differences because the results showed that

they are both neutral on the impacts of chain mail: social and psychological

Conclusion

From the summary of findings the following conclusion are drawn:

1. Most of the students from Grade 12 ICT belong to 17-18 years of age.

2. Reporting chain mails have the least significance among the questions.

3. Knowing that their friends that they believe their ideas about chain mail.

Recommendation

1.) Overall, based on the findings of the survey, students in 12 ICT should ot base to the

chain mail because not all chain mails are true.
