participants, including actors, musicians and dancers, told the
story of her remarkable life during perfomances over four

would wash their faces in the dew of the early morning. They
believed this made them very beautiful for the following year. The
rest of the day was given over to various festivities. There was
dancing on the village green, archery contest and exhibitions of
strength. The highlight of the day was the crowning of the May
Queen, the human replica of Flora. The Spring Day is also
associated with the national hero Robin Hood.

Another interesting British autumn holiday is celebrated on the
night of November 5th: that is Guy Fawkes Night or
Bonfire Night.
On this night, all over England there is a thunder of fireworks and
bonfires burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes, the man who was trying
to make the Gunpowder Plot and blow up the Houses of
Parliament in London in the XVII century. At the same time many
people burn the accumulated garbage in the yard, arranging a
farewell to autumn, boys on the streets beg for coins with the
words alleged to Guy, to buy firecrackers on the collected money.

early settlers on the east coast of North America arrived. They
traveled from England on a ship called the Mayflower and made
their new home in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. After a
rough winter, in which about half of them died, they turned for help
to neighboring Indians (Native Americans), who taught them how
to plant corn and other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest
inspired the Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast.
To this day, Thanksgiving dinner almost always includes some of
the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce,
potatoes, pumpkin pie. Before the meal begins, families or friends
usually pause to give thanks for their blessings, including the joy
of being united for the occasion.

advocate of using nonviolent means to protest discrimination.
Martin Luther King, Jr was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in
1964 as a result of his dedication to fighting for civil rights without
resorting to violence.
King was assassinated in 1968 and many civil rights’ activists
petitioned for a holiday to be declared in honor of the civil rights’
leader. First this holiday was held on 20 January 1986.
The purpose of the public holiday is to remember the struggles
that people have had to overcome to obtain civil rights. As the
holiday approaches, many schools dedicate class sessions to
teaching students about the importance of preventing racism and
other forms of prejudice.
In recent years, the holiday observing the birthday of Martin
Luther King, Jr has become an opportunity for Americans to
dedicate their day-off to providing volunteer services to charitable
organizations that are aimed at ending prejudice and helping
people who feel they have been discriminated against.
