Evaluation of pre-assessment data:


- The students performed fairly well on the pre-assessment. I noticed that many students
struggled with identifying the theme of a story.
- I believe that students performed well on this pre-assessment because we had just
finished a unit of non-fiction texts and many of the skills transfer into fiction texts such as
explaining the plot or problem/solution and making inferences.
- Students need more direct instruction about identifying the theme of a fictional text.

Evaluation of post-assessment data:


- Overall, students did an amazing job on this assessment. Their ability to determine the
theme of a fictional text clearly improved.
- Students whose grade dropped between the pre and post assessment are students on
IEPs or students who struggle to apply strategies to tests. The same students struggled
on the quarterly assessments a few weeks prior to this.
