Bureau of Statistics report INTERPLAST TEAM’S 100TH VISIT

during the survey period accounts for almost
half of the value of the work done.
THE Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics’
construction survey has revealed that the total
estimated value of work put for the second
quarter of this year was $58.9 million.
This is a decrease of $2.2 million (3.6 per
cent) from the previous quarter.
Of the total estimated value of $58.9
million, $52.7 million was for work done
in the private sector and $6.2 million for
work done for the general government.
The bureau’s statistical news reported that
the total estimated value of work put in
place for new building and capital repairs
during the quarter was $28.3 million, an
increase of $1.0 million (3.6 per cent) from
the previous quarter.
“Of the $28.3 million, $3.9 million were
for residential buildings and $24.4 million
were for non-residential buildings.
“New building and capital repairs
accounted for 48.1 per cent of the total
estimated value of work put in place, of
which 13.8 per cent were for residential
buildings and 86.2 per cent were for non-
residential buildings,” the bureau reported.
“Hotels, shopping and educational
institutions contributed significantly
towards non-residential buildings.”
The bureau said current repairs and
maintenance accounted for 16.5 per cent
of the total estimated value of work put in
place, of which 99.2 per cent were for work
done in the private sector and 0.8 per cent
for the general government.
It said that of the total estimated value
of $9.7 million, 14.7 per cent were for
residential buildings and 85.3 per cent
were for non-residential buildings.
Meanwhile, civil engineering works
accounted for 35.4 per cent of the total
estimated value of work put in place, of
which 74.4 per cent were for work done
in the private sector and 25.6 per cent for
work done for the general government.
“Of the total estimated value of $20.9
million, 34.2 per cent were for earthmoving
works, 28.0 per cent were for civil
engineering works and 37.8 per cent were
for other types of work done.”
INTERPLAST Australia and

a special meeting with staff
from the Ministry of Health and
Colonial War Memorial Hospital
to commemorate the team’s 100th
visit to Fiji.
The Interplast has carried out
7634 consultations and 4234 life
changing operations in Fiji since it
started coming to our shores.

Zealand general manager Marion
Wright said for this visit, they planned to
operate on 60-70 cleft lips, cleft palates;
burns scar contractures, hand injuries
and tumors.
“All operations are free of charge and
allow the patient to live their life free
from disability,” she said.
“Medical teams from Australia will
volunteer their time and expertise to
provide free surgery to local patients
who would otherwise not receive the
treatment they require due to poverty or
isolation.
“For our program, we have budgeted a
figure of $40,000 that provides treatment
to about 60-70 patients.
“The cost for one patient would be about
$500-$600. If that was to be costed in
Australian terms, you’d be looking at
around $10,000. For the team, they get far

by Melbourne-based Rotary District

She said all Interplast volunteers were
fully qualified in their field of expertise.
“While our teams are here, it is always
important they work with local doctors
and nurses,” she said. “They use the
opportunity to help train and pass on
their knowledge in whatever area of
expertise.
“We are looking at helping train doctors
that are going through their training at
the moment and organise short periods
in Australia,” Ms Wright said.
The team will be in Fiji until October 15.

Fiji’s former Prime Minister, Mahendra
Chaudhry, has been released on bail after
being charged with breaching the military
government’s emergency laws.
Mr Chaudhry, leader of the opposition
Labour party, was detained last Friday
for allegedly holding an illegal public
gathering.
He and five others appeared in court again
on Wednesday.
His government was overthrown in a coup

Over $56m worth of marijuana

Over fifty six million dollars worth of
marijuana plants were uprooted for the first
nine months of this year alone by the Fiji
Police Force.
That was the revelation by the Director
National Intelligence Bureau, SSP Henry
Brown while speaking at the 2nd National
Anti-Money Laundering Conference.
According to SSP Brown, drug cultivation
and its proceeds falls under money
laundering and this is one aspect the Fiji
Police Force is looking at.

International education (IE) is New
Zealand’s fifth largest export industry
generating an income of some $2billion in
2009.
Given the industry’s potential, this is
predicted to rise to $3b in the next five
years.
Already about 32,000 people are employed
in the sector making it particularly
significant during the ongoing recession.
The increasing demands for IE are catered
for all over the world by established
universities, polytechnics, and a number of
private providers.
This is a relatively untapped market
for Fiji’s three universities even though
Central Queensland University did make
an attempt in the 1990s through its campus
at Suva Point.
The apparently ever-widening potential
that this market offers has led to a
proliferation of providers in both Australia
and New Zealand.
Tourism Fiji ‘milks’ South Korean
market potential
Millions of South Koreans are now being
exposed to the ‘Fiji message’ via a high-
profile promotional campaign.
It represents one of its biggest ever Fiji
tourism marketing initiatives in the South
Korean market to date
The initiative is part of collaboration
between the national tourist office and
South Korea’s biggest dairy product
company, Namyang Milk & Beverage.
They have combined in a ‘Fiji fresh
Expedition’ promotion to send a group of
seven lucky winners - plus a national TV
film crew - to sample the delights of a Fiji
travel experience.
While in Fiji the group of seven winners
took part in a host of activities all of which
were designed to showcase Fiji’s ability
to deliver a true and exciting holiday
experience to every type of traveler.
Everything the group did was captured by
the two-man SBS (Korea) film crew.

Each of these has encountered a range
of problems in the area of teaching and
learning involving international students.
In recognition of this, studies continue
to be carried out on how best to improve
teaching and learning in the IE sector, so
that students reap the full benefits of IE.
The Journal of International Education
and Business (JIEB) is one such attempt
at pooling knowledge to enhance delivery
in the IE sector. An initiative of the Centre
for Research in International Education
(CRIE) based at AIS St. Helens, the second
issue of JIEB was launched recently.
With contributions from a wide range
of experienced teachers, writers and
researchers from around the world, JIEB is
poised to make further contributions to the
IE sector in the future.

Sugar Corporation lost $24.4m TEEN CHAINED AND LOCKED

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation lost
$24.4million in foreign exchange because
of the devaluation of the Fiji dollar last year.
This was revealed by former chief
executive officer Deo Saran in the
company’s 2010 annual report.
The loss in foreign exchange was on the
Exim bank loan.
The FSC recorded a loss of $175m,
announced last week followed by the
resignation of the chairman Gautam
Ramswarup. This week Mr Saran and his
general manager operations, Annamale
Naicker also resigned.
Sugar production for 2010 declined by
19.4 per cent, and molasses production
increased by 13.3 per cent resulting in the
net decline in revenue by $42.7 million.
The revenue declined further by $11
million because of the decrease in sugar
unit price by 7.6 per cent and increase in
molasses unit price by 14.6 per cent.
“The total decline in trading results due to
decrease in volume and unit price of sugar
and molasses is $53.7m,” the FSC said.
“During the year, the corporation reduced
its importation of sugar, resulting in
reduction of importation costs, which
improved the trading results by $25.9
million.
“Taking into account the above factors,
the net revenue available for distribution
declined, resulting in reduction in cane
payment to growers by $16.8 million.”

Two people - a woman related to him and
a man not related to him - are in police
custody at the Labasa Police Station and
are being questioned.
Vishal said that he was kept under lock
and key for two days without food by a
man not related to him.
He said he was glad to be safe - away from
home and the torture that has changed his
life forever.
Police assistant spokesperson Inspector
Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed that the
victim was found chained to a post by
criminal investigators with a sugary
substance all over his body.
He said besides being handcuffed and
shackled with a dog chain, it is confirmed
that warm sugar syrup was poured over his
initial investigations revealed
that a woman related to the
victim and a man were part of
the alleged torture.
“Initial police investigations
reveal the victim was
treated in such a manner
because he spent $3,” he
said.
“At this stage, investigations
are still continuing where
all those involved are
under interrogation,” Mr
Sokomuri said.
The teenager was medically examined at
the Labasa Hospital and his statement is
being taken by police officers.
In the wake of the incident, the Fiji Police
Force has condemned such acts saying
they are “unacceptable and inhumane.”
Inspector Sokomuri said many cases
of abuse remained unreported in
communities.
However, with strenuous awareness through
police community policing, people are
starting to open up and report such cases.
“It is sad that such inhumane crimes
are still being committed in our
communities,” Inspector Sokomuri said.
“It is a concern that children fall victims
to ruthless attacks by the very people they
trust.”
Police has called on members of the
public to be the voice of the children and
immediately report any case of abuse.

A SINGAPORE Airlines plane flying
from Moscow to Singapore made an
emergency landing in the eastern Indian
city of Kolkata after a bomb scare, an
airport official said.

concluded a Georgian athlete’s
inexperience on the high-speed luge
track led to his death in Whistler just

Winter Games.
On February. 12, 2010, Nodar
Kumaritashvili, 21, lost control of his
sled during a practice run, was thrown
from the track and collided with a
metal pillar, killing him instantly.
The B.C. Coroners Service launched
an investigation into his death, examining
numerous factors related to the athlete,
his sled, the track condition and design,
training and preparation, and the
circumstances surrounding the fateful
training run.
Coroner Tom Pawlowski’s report, issued
on Monday, concluded Nodar died
from multiple blunt force injuries, but
blamed the accident on several factors,
including the speed of the track and

case reopened
A FRESH investigation has been
opened into the 14-year-old mystery
surrounding the death of child beauty
queen JonBenet Ramsey.
The Daily Camera reported JonBenet’s
older brother Burke, 23, is one person
who has already been contacted by police
for new questioning.
He was nine at the time her death.
Drowning at Seaworld where
trainer died
THE Orange County Sheriff’s Office
is investigating the drowning death of
a man that occurred at SeaWorld in
Orlando, Florida.
Police received a report of a near
drowning at approximately 11am local
time (2am AEST). Park lifeguards and
fire department personnel attempted to
perform life-saving measures on the man.
He was taken to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital
where he died.
US, NZ troops join Aust
military exercises

However, Karr’s DNA did not match
that found on JonBenet’s body, and
prosecutors announced that no charges
would be filed against him.
Information on the man’s cause of death
was being withheld until a medical
examiner makes a determination. Police
were also withholding the victim’s identity
until his family is notified.

Tips on How to Stop a Baby
from Crying
It is frustrating enough for the parents
when an infant won’t stop crying, so for
a babysitter with far less experience, it
can actually bring her to tears. If you are
a babysitter, nanny, or other childcare
provider who often cares for infants, or
even if you are a new parent, here is a list
of possible reasons why baby won’t stop
crying and what to do to calm her:
• When you are dealing with a
crying baby, look at the time. Is it anywhere
near feeding time? If it is within half an
hour, try the bottle. Baby’s schedules
change as often as they grow that their
needs can actually change overnight.
• Crying babies are usually trying
to tell you something and it could be
something as simple as “I am tired.” If it
is not anywhere near feeding time, check
to see if it could be close to nap time. If so,
you could try rocking the baby for a few
minutes and putting him down for a nap.
• Is the baby’s diaper wet or soiled?
If so, change it, even if the parent said the
baby should not need her diaper changed
until after her nap. This is not always
something that can be predicted!
• A crying baby might just need
to burp. Hold the baby upright against
your chest with his head just above your
shoulder and pat his back gently. Trapped
gas is very painful for a baby, but once it
is released the baby usually quiets down
immediately. Another position that may
help baby to release gas is to lay him across
your lap and rub his back.
• Try distracting a crying baby by
blowing raspberries, making silly sounds,
dancing around, or making funny faces.
• Sometimes babies just want to
be held. If the baby is in an exersaucer,
bouncy seat, or swing, try picking her up
and holding her.
• If baby was lying on the floor or
in a stationary device, try moving him to a
vibrating chair or swing. Try the swing at
different speeds if it has several settings, to
see if he has a preference.
• Lots of babies like motion when
they are being held. Try bouncing her very
gently by bending your knees slightly and
straightening them while holding her, or
walk around with her and pat her back.

Occasionally, you may need to
combine all of these by holding
the baby upright, walking
around, very gently bouncing
her and patting her back. Try
adding humming or singing to
her as well.
• Some babies want to
be held but do not want to be
cradled or have their face in
your shoulder. Many babies
prefer to be held facing outward
from your body. Try holding
the baby with his back against
your chest or stomach, one arm around his
torso and the other supporting his bottom
through his legs. Babies are curious and
want to see everything! A crying baby may
just be bored. (Warning - this is NOT an
appropriate position to hold very young
infants that still need their head supported.)
• Does baby use a pacifier? Some
babies just have a fussy time of day, when
not much makes them happy and the baby
won’t stop crying even after you have tried
all of the suggestions above. If this is the
case, hopefully the parents have left you
with some ideas of what to do to make
baby happy or strategies for dealing with
it. If the baby uses a pacifier, this may be
all it takes to quiet her down.
SUBTRACTION
• Many babies just go through what
is called a “strange period” where they
cry and scream if anyone other than the
immediate family or a very familiar person
tries to hold them or talk to them. In this
case, if the baby has older siblings, you
may want to employ their help by asking
them to talk to the baby or to play nearby
so the baby can hear and/or see them.
• While a crying baby may be a bored
baby, he may also be an over stimulated
baby. If the baby has a “sound machine” or
“white noise machine” try rocking him or
holding him in the room with the machine
turned on and the lights dimmed. If he does
not have a sound machine, a fan, vacuum,
washing machine or dryer, or dishwasher
will work just as well.
• If the baby is a newborn, you
could try swaddling her to see if that helps.
Many newborns like the secure feeling of
being wrapped up warm and snug. Experts
say it reminds them of being in the womb.
• Parents usually know when
their baby is teething. Hopefully if this is
the case, the parents have left you with
teething rings and other paraphernalia for
teething babies.
• Sometimes when a baby won’t
stop crying it is simply because he is
uncomfortable. Touch the back of the
baby’s neck to see if he is too hot or too
cold. Then add or remove a layer of clothes
accordingly.

Nude Queensland cops allowed back
on force after bucks party prank
BRISBANE’S six embarrassed “nude
cops” have finally been given the green
light to return to full operational duties.
The men, five from the Special Emergency
Response Team and one from the Tactical
Crime Squad, are expected to return to
their normal roles within about one month.
In an embarrassing blow for Queensland
Police Service, members of the public saw
the off-duty men running naked around
their van at Capalaba in Brisbane’s east
during a buck’s party prank last September.
The men have since been suspended
from full operational duties pending an
investigation, and last month some were
demoted while others were hit with pay
cuts.

complex often wrongly towed away as
patrons pay $400 for their release
AN inner Brisbane shopping centre has
become notorious for towing patrons’
cars, often for the wrong reasons,
and then charging $400 to release the
vehicles.
The towing practices of Central Brunswick
shopping complex have come to the
attention of Brisbane City councilors and
the Office of Fair Trading amid claims of
over-zealous and predatory conduct by
contractor We Tow U.
Patrons towed by We Tow U staff who
photographed the wrong customers leaving
the premises, claims of up to two dozen
patrons being towed in less than two hours
and centre employees themselves being
towed are among the cases uncovered.
There is also growing concern among
business managers in the complex that
the practices of We Tow U, which charges
$400 to release cars from its Acacia Ridge
holding yard, are alienating customers.
“We all hate them. We’re always chasing
tow truck drivers away, saying, ‘Leave our
customers alone’,” one said.

22, were dining at the complex’s sushi
restaurant in February when their cars were
towed by We Tow U staff claiming to have
photographed the pair leaving the premises

When the media raised the six-car contract
limit with We Tow U manager Graham
Douglas, he said this was “not right” before
refusing to comment further.
Complicating things for patrons is that the
separate managements of each side of the
complex reserve the right to tow patrons
who park in one half then shop in another.
Australian PM honors
fallen troops
Julia Gillard has used her first overseas
visit as prime minister to personally pay
tribute to Australian troops fighting in
Afghanistan while also honoring the 21
soldiers killed in the conflict.
The Prime Minister flew into the Australian
base at Tarin Kowt before travelling to
Kabul for meetings with Afghan President
Hamid Karzai and International Security
Force commander General David Petraeus.
In what is her first international trip since
becoming PM, Ms Gillard surprised troops
and officials at Tarin Kowt, where she
praised their dedication and reassured them
of Australia’s commitment to the mission
in Afghanistan.
Ms Gillard joined Australian soldiers
for a barbecue and paid tribute to their
“determination and bravery” and the
sacrifice made by those killed during the
deployment.
Five of the 21 Australians killed in the
conflict have died since the election was
called in July.

After they raised the alarm Wendy returned
to the creek to watch over her kids.
Amazingly, when rescuers arrived several
hours later the children were still asleep.
“It was an agonising couple of hours,”

program matching donations ended
Sunday night.
The Canadian Red Cross raised $18 million
to help those affected by the July flooding that
killed 1,700 and displaced millions. Of the
total, $8.8 million is eligible for the Pakistan
Flood Relief Fund, the fund-matching
program administered by the Canadian
International Development Agency.
World Vision Canada raised $5.1 million
for Pakistani relief. The Humanitarian
Coalition, a network of four Canadian
humanitarian organizations — Care
Canada, Oxfam Canada, Oxfam Quebec
and Save the Children Canada — raised
close to $4 million.
The Canadian government has already
pledged $33 million to helping flood
victims, making it the fourth-largest donor
to flood relief in Pakistan, CIDA reports.
The government pledged an initial $2
million on Aug. 3 and announced an
additional $31 million on Aug. 14.
While fundraisers called donations
“good” and “solid,” there was still some
disappointment.
“We still think we could have done
more,” said Kevin McCort, Care Canada’s
president.

Punjabi or other languages for the Stanley
Cup playoffs, but during the regular season
— which begins Thursday — it will be
English only, Keay said.
“The challenge we have is that we have to
continue to operate within our means. I’m
sure there are people who are going to be
disappointed in this,” he said.

Albertans are Canada’s worst Canadian wrestling women

distracted drivers
When it comes to distracted driving,
Albertans are number one.
A new survey conducted by insurance
giant Allstate Canada has found that
while an overwhelming majority of
people frown upon distracted driving, 75
per cent of Canadians still talk, text and
eat while behind the wheel.
Distracted drivers are blamed for 80
per cent of crashes, with young people
between 18- and 24-years-old being the

RCMP and border police were at the port
of Montreal Thursday morning, where
nine migrants were found in a shipping
container.
The migrants were discovered around 1
a.m., hidden inside a false-bottom in the
container at a terminal in the city’s east end.
They are believed to be from the north
African country of Morocco. Their
condition is not clear.
Robert Gervais, a spokesman for
Immigration Canada, told QMI Agency
that his office has not yet received a request
for a refugee hearing.
“(Canada Border Services) can detain
someone for 48 hours,” he said. “We’ll
probably know by the end of the day
if CBSA wants to keep these people
detained.”
Gervais says the earliest that a hearing
could be held is Friday afternoon, or
possibly Monday morning.
It’s not clear what ship the Moroccans
arrived on. An investigation is underway.

Easy ways to get more fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are an important
part of a healthy eating plan. But is
getting enough sometimes a challenge?
Not any more.
Almost all fruits and vegetables are low
in the things you don’t want (like sodium,
calories and fat) but still pack a powerful
punch of nutrients, vitamins and fibre.
Even if you have picky eaters to feed, these
seven sure-fire tips will help you add more
of the good stuff to your meals and snacks
without even trying.
Try something new.
If you’re bored with your fruits and
veggies, chances are you’re not
getting enough variety. Next time
you go grocery shopping, try fruits or
vegetables you’ve never had before;
for example, papaya, lychee, guava,
bamboo shoots and rapini.
Save time with frozen or canned. While
fresh is best, canned or frozen fruits and
vegetables are good alternatives. Be sure
you have some handy for when you’re
short on time. And while they have about
the same nutritional value as fresh, check
the label to ensure that there’s no sugar or
syrup added (for canned fruits) and that
veggies have no salt added.
Soup it up!
Soups are a great way to get more veggies
into your diet and your kids’ tummies.
Puree squash, broccoli, carrots, peppers
or just about any vegetable you can
think of and add them to your favourite
soup recipe. But don’t stop there: Find
and try recipes for fruity soups that use
melon or apple.
Add zing to tomato sauce or chili.
Another way to get more vegetables

grating carrots, broccoli, mushrooms
or zucchini into their favourite tomato

to sneak them in, adding vegetables to

Be prepared for the unexpected emergency
- always carry a First Aid kit, map, ice
scraper, snow brush, matches, candles,
flashlight, warning triangles, flares, tow
and battery jumping cables, folding
shovel, a bag of sand, a blanket, winter
gloves, cell phone if you have one, and an
emergency HELP sign that you can put in
the back window if you need help.
- A blanket is a good idea - just in case.
If you have any winter clothes you don’t
wear anymore, especially an old pair of
boots, throw them in the trunk, too.
- Keep all your car’s windows, mirrors
and lights clear of snow and ice.
- Always keep the air intake grill free of
snow and ice.

snow and ice from your car. This will
help avoid sheets of ice flying off the car
and hitting the car behind you. Check that
headlamps, turn signals, and tail lights are
unobstructed by snow and ice.
- Clear off the entire car, not just a little

visibility in poor conditions, because you

excuse you have for not praising the Lord is
being out of breath!

Beloved, when you have put on your beautiful
garments of praise, you are lifted above your
own make-up and disposition and swing far
out into the realm of the Spirit. As for praising
the Lord in your heart, why, your heart is no
different from anyone else’s. When it gets just
so full of glorious praises and adoration and
He becomes so real, your heart will run over
and you will shout His praises, and your voice
will be blended with the voices of all the other
redeemed ones and soar upward to the Lamb
that sits upon the throne.
I was much impressed recently, while in the
Kingdom of Tonga and Fiji, by the “Praises
of the People during their worship in the
churches other public places, This message
clearly showed me the people in the Island
Nations even though they do not have much

be a warning to us Christians living in North

it seems that not one breath of heavenly gales
is stirring, feels the same pressure upon the
meeting, and refusing to look at or recognize
the enemy, says: “This is the time to praise our
Jesus. Thy glory and presence fill the heavens
and the earth. They fill my heart just now. It
overflows and fills this room.”
Such faith and praise is contagious. The fire
of unwavering confidence in God that burns
within this temple soon leaps over its parapets,
spreads first to those in the seats nearby, then
on to the farthest corner of the room, inspiring,
encouraging, lifting up drooping heads,
strengthening feeble knees, and in a moment
every eye is fixed on Jesus ... the Latter Rain is
heard pattering on the roofs, running down the
troughs, overflowing the rain-barrels, the dry
ground is saturated, and the wilderness and the

Ingredients
1 cup Self rising flour
1 can Condensed Milk
2 cup Water
1 1/2 cup Sugar
½ tspn Cardamom Powder
4 tbsp Butter
1/8 cup Yogurt
1/2 cup Milk

Ingredients:
10 taro leaves (washed)
1/2 cup urad dhal (soaked overnight)
1/2 onion (optional)
1 lime juice
3 chillies
3 cloves garlic
1 tspn. salt
Preparation
1. Grind dhal
2. Add lime juice and salt

bowl. Add flour, condensed milk,
cardamom powder and yogurt and

* Heat the water, add sugar, bring to
boil and simmer.
* Boil to reduce the water by half.
Heat the oil and fry the balls to a

ends with the dhal paste
6. Tie with a string and steam for
about 30 minutes
7. Remove string, cut into 1/2 inch
slices
8 Coat each piece with rice and chana
flour mixture
9. Deep fry in vegetable oil, a couple
of minutes each side or until slightly
golden.
Serve with any chutney.

Suva Muslims end drought
Champions Suva Muslim side in a team photo after the IDC win - they ended the 25 year drought .
Suva has finally laid their hands on
the Muslim Inter district trophy that
had eluded them for 25 years; they
beat Ba 2-1 in a thriller final Sunday
at Serpentine Park in Surrey.
Jubilant Coach Robert Ali couldn’t
put into words how thrilled his side
was, said, “It is a great feeling to
finally have the championship after
finishing second to Nadi in the last
two finals”.
The Ba man praised the resilience
of his players in achieving the
milestone.
Ali’s Suva last won the tournament
in 1985.
“It had been a long run to the finish.

when needed again. I use a lot of cans for
small touch-ups and I find this method saves
quite a lot.

General Information, Anatomy and
Functions of the Lung
• Lungs are situated in the chest
(thoracic cavity)
• They wrap around the heart and major
blood vessels going to and from the
heart and esophagus
• The right lung has three sections, or
lobes, and the left lung has two
• The lungs and inner walls of the
chest are covered with a thin double
membrane called the pleura, normally
touching and moving easily during
breathing
• Air is inhaled through the nose into the
pharynx (back of the throat), the trachea
(windpipe), and finally into the main
stem bronchi
• The bronchial tubes or bronchi branch
into smaller tubes within each lobe and
again into bronchioles ending in the
alveolar ducts
• Alveolar ducts lead to tiny thin-walled
clusters of sacs called alveoli
• Average lung has about 300 million
alveoli
• The exchange of oxygen and carbon
dioxide takes place in the alveoli where
blood capillaries are present
• Lung cancer is the second most
frequent type of cancer diagnosis for
both men and women
• Lung cancer is the most common
cause of cancer death for both men and
women in North America, accountable
for approximately 27% of cancer
mortality
• Majority of patients have extensive
disease at the time of diagnosis
• If diagnosed early, lung cancer can be
eradicated in over 90% of patients
• Occurs most often in the 55 to 70
year age group but in recent decades
incidence has increased two-fold in the
40 to 44 year old group and ten-fold in
the 60 to 64 year group   • People exposed to second-hand smoke
• Common sites for lung cancer metastases
are brain, liver, bone and lymph nodes
Symptoms and Signs of Lung Cancer
• No symptoms in early stages
• Symptoms in the more advanced
stages include:
- Chronic cough (smoker's cough)
- New or changing cough, particularly if
the sputum contains blood  sources. Heavy metals: chromates,
- Change in lung function  arsenic, nickel
- Blood in sputum, even small amounts
- Wheezing (unrelated to asthma),
hoarseness
- Repeated episodes of pneumonia or
bronchitis
- Fever, weakness, weight loss
- Chest pain
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Enlargement of lymph nodes in neck
- Up to 12% of patients have "clubbing"
or broadening of the fingernails
- About 12% of patients have pleural
effusion or fluid in the lungs at the time
of diagnosis
- Infection is a common complication
- Collapse of a segment, lobe, or all of a
lung (atelectasis)
-   Obstructive pneumonitis  occurs in
60% of all patients
• Symptoms from metastases may occur
before symptoms from the lung disease
Causes of Cancer
• 85% of lung cancers are related to
tobacco smoking
over many years are also at risk
• In 1994, tobacco smoke  was
responsible for the deaths of  5300
people in British Columbia. 53% of
British Columbians worked in an
environment where tobacco smoke was
a risk.
• Exposure to uranium or other radiation
• Patients with history of chronic
bronchitis or emphysema
• Asbestos dust
• People who have survived one lung
cancer are at risk of a second cancer,
particularly if they continue to smoke
How Smoking Causes Cancer
• Tobacco smoke contains many toxic
chemicals capable of causing cancer.
• Hair-like cilia beat in rhythmic
fashion to move the mucus upwards
from the lung, removing any particles
trapped in the mucus. Smoke
inhalation damages this cleansing
process by which the lung protects
itself from injury.
• A number of other factors, such as diet,
may have an effect on the development of
lung cancer; e.g., a low vitamin A intake
may be associated with increased risk
• However, beta-carotene supplements
increase lung cancer risk
Prevention
• Prevention (never smoking) holds the
greatest hope for the future.
• Quitting smoking is the single most
important action you can take to protect
your health 
• Quitting smoking does little to
restore lost lung function, but quitting
will help slow the rate of decline in
lung function
• Quitting smoking also decreases the
risk of heart attack, stroke and coronary
heart disease.
