Performance Task #2

You are an apprentice researcher. Your job in the company is to study the prevailing claims of other researchers. You
will work with a partner and make recommendations regarding the results of your study and present them to the head
researcher of the company through a written report. She will assess your study based on the given rubric.

Performance Task #2

Study #1:
Humerous bones from the same species of animal have approximately the same length-to-width ratios. It is known that
Species A has a mean ratio of 8.97. Suppose that 40 fossil humerous bones were unearthed at a site where Species A is
known to have flourished. The length-to-width ratios of the unearthed bones has a mean of 9.26 and standard deviation
1.20. Can we conclude that these bones belong to Species A? Use α = 0.05.

Study #2:
An outbreak of Salmonella-related illness was attributed to ice cream produced at a certain factory. Scientists measured
the level of Salmonella in 9 randomly sampled batches of ice cream. The levels (in MPN/g) were: 0.514 0.123 0.304
0.627 0.321 0.789 0.602 0.354 0.423 At 1% level of significance, is there evidence that the mean level of Salmonella in
the ice cream is not 0.3 MPN/g? Use α = 0.01.
