TECHNICAL PRESENTATION
AUDIENCE
Dealer and customer personnel who are responsible for the daily maintenance and service of the 992G
Wheel Loader.
CONTENT
This presentation provides basic information for the 992G Wheel Loader front linkage. It is intended to
be used in conjunction with existing training material and service manuals.
OBJECTIVES
After learning the information in this meeting guide, personnel will be able to:
1. perform a Daily Walk Around Inspection with emphasis on the front linkage;
2. identify problems before the problems become failures; and
3. inspect and maintain the pin flag retention systems.

INTRODUCTION
This presentation identifies the best maintenance and service practices for
the 992G Wheel Loader structures.
REWORK PROGRAMS
Note: The instructor should provide the students with the above
literature and go over the literature in class.

Starting at the articulation joint on the left side of the machine, the
inspector should check the condition of the hoses (1) and the injectors (2).

Standing in the same location and looking up, the inspector can check the
lubrication lines (1) and (2) and hoses for the A pin and G pin. The
inspector should also check the end plates (3) and (4) and the bolts (5).
This is a visual inspection, checking for loose or damaged parts.
The inspector should also check the left end of the Y pin (not pictured)
from this location.

Moving forward around the front left tire, the inspector should check the
lines and hoses (1), (2), and (3) and the injectors (4). The end plate (5)
and bolt (6) for the K pin should be checked also.
STMG 992 - 11 -

The E and F pin areas can be checked from the same location. The
inspector should check the flag, retaining plate, retaining bolts, and the
lubrication lines at the E pin (1). The lubrication line (2) should be in
good condition with no leaks. At the F pin (3), check the flag, retaining
plates, retaining bolts, and verify there is grease exiting the relief valve.

From the right side of the machine, check the hoses (1) and lines (2) on
the bottom of the bucket link (3). Any leaks or damaged components
should be repaired immediately.

On the right side of the K pin, check the flag (1), retaining plate (2), and
fasteners (3). Grease should be exiting relief valve (4).

Move to the rear of the right front tire and visually inspect the right side
of the G pin (1) and the A pin (2). Again, check the flags, retaining
plates, and fasteners looking for damage or looseness. Also check for
grease exiting the relief valves.
The inspector should also check the right end of the Y pin (not pictured)
from this location.

The table above shows the possible progression of front linkage pin joint
problems on the 992G Wheel Loader.
15
The 992G Wheel Loader linkage design transfers the bucket side loads
through the pin flags (1) at the A and B pins. The surfaces between the
flag, retention plate (2), and the retention block on the bucket are not
lubricated and do wear over time allowing increased motion. The
increased motion will increase the wear rate and if allowed to progress
can cause interference between the frame and boom or the boom and
bucket. The following should be used as a guideline for flag and retainer
maintenance.
1. The nominal design clearance between the pin flag (1) and retention
plate (2) is 2.0 mm axially (pin in-and-out) and 3.0 mm
radially (pin turning).
2. The minimum clearance between the pin flag (1) and the retention
plate (2) should be 0.5 mm axially and radially.
5. Whenever a new pin is installed the clearance between the pin flag
and retention plate should be checked to be sure they fall within the
guidelines listed above.

COMPONENT REPLACEMENT
Always replace the bearing when a new pin is used. The bearing is coated
with a black crystalline material that aids the break-in process between the
pin and bearing.
The pin and the bearing should both be replaced when there is galling or
metal pickup either component.
The pin and the bearing should both be replaced when wear has reduced
the diameter of the pin by 3 mm.
18
BEARING REMOVAL
The bearings on the 992G Wheel Loader front linkage should be removed
using the method shown above.
Cut the bearing approximately 2/3 through the thickness of the bearing in
four equally spaced locations around the internal circumference. Take
care not to damage the spacer or the bore while cutting the bearing. When
the bearing cools it should shrink enough to allow easy removal.
19
The above graphic lists guidelines for servicing pin joints on the 992G
Wheel Loader.
20
BREAK IN PROCEDURE
Following any pin or bearing replacement, the pin joints on the 992G
Wheel Loader need to be broke in. The break in procedure insures the pin
joints are working properly and receive ample lubrication as the pin and
bearings wear in.

CONCLUSION
The 992G Wheel Loader linkage will provide the expected service life
when it is serviced and maintained correctly.
