SUBJECT: TEK-A Main Deck Vibration Floor Study

REASONS FOR ANALYSIS: Identify the source of high vibration on TEK-A Main Deck.

Background
TEK-A main deck where three units of gas lift compressor K560A, K560B and K560C located had been
subjected to high vibration for some time which had likely contributed periodically to failure. Study had
been made to determine the cause of high vibration, how severe it was and to make recommendations
required to resolve any problems detected.

Vibration measurement (velocity vibration in mm/sec RMS) was carried out at 46 selected locations on
the identified floor deck area including I-beam in different directions (horizontal and vertical). All the
measured data are Fourier analysed to get the frequency spectrum. Table-1 shows the vibration levels at
various locations.

• The vibration measurement was done using CSI 2130 FFT vibration analyser and general
accelerometer at selected locations in the main deck area.
• The measurement was carried out with Gas Lift Compressor K560A and K560C running with
K560B down and the frequency spectrums were observed.
• All the measurement that the vibration levels were alarming surrounding K560C compared to
K560A.

FINDINGS:
• During data collection it was observed Caterpillar engine was running between 1056 to 1076 rpm
and with speed ratio of 3.194 reciprocating compressor operated at 330.6 to 336.88 rpm.
• With radiator fan speed unknown we assuming the fans to be operated over a speed range as low as
200 to 400rpm.
• Calculated belt frequency for radiator fan is 343.5cpm.
• It was observed from the measurement that a frequency component at 307.5cpm/5.125Hz was
predominant (with high vibration value of 1.46mm/sec) in all spectrum compared to measurement
surrounding K560A and K560B.
• Horizontal measurement at I-beam located next to K560C has to two individual peaks at frequency
of 384.38 and 691.88cpm (a difference of 307.5 CPM). This is known as a beat frequency generated
by the 2 frequencies.
• Two pillow block bearings supporting radiator fan shaft for K560C observed vibrating and
wobbling. Vibration spectrums showed predominant of belt frequency suspected belt resonance.
• With unknown radiator fan speed and it natural frequency which only can be identified when the unit
is ‘OFF’ we suspect the source of main floor deck vibrate is due to radiator fan and belt resonance
and beat vibration.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
• ‘OFF’ gas lift compressor K560C, observe and measure the vibration reading at main deck floor. If
the frequency of 307.5cpm still exists although with small amplitude this might due to belting
resonance coming from unit 560A and 560B. Altering the belt tension or belt length can change
natural belt frequency.
• Dynamic balancing for radiator fan for K560C which will reduce fan natural frequency thus
reducing vibration impact at floor deck.
